NY chicken lover!!!!

I agree Marquisella, that would make me angry. I have never fed any of my birds grit and they do just fine. They all have access to the outside, except for the chicks of course but they only get feed until 4 weeks when I kick them out.
I'm up to 14 chicks now out of 34 eggs. Still lots to go!

Wow ...Congrats ! what if they all hatch ...you will really be buried in chicks ...

You are right ...I didnt see the couple I looked at did . Most chickens that free range get enough grit right ?
I see mine eating dirt all the time ..

Sometimes I try to go back and find the original post and good garden o' peas, I never can.

I always thought that the feed had enough calcium but apparently not cuz times come when I get soft shells that crack easily. My Marans lay a nice hard shell most of the time. So maybe not. I do get bumps on the shells on occasion, which I think is due to a bit to much.

I just add the insoluble grit for my own peace of mind I guess. I always dump a bunch on top of greens I give them to make sure they have enough in their crop to grind things up. Then too I just dump it in a pile and let them do what they gotta do.

I reckon it can't hurt even if I don't need to do it. Right?

Lynzi, I understand what you mean about cl ads. I have a puppy up there now and I couldn't tell you how many replies I have gotten but I still have the puppy :/ I haven't had a single reply for my guinea keets though, maybe $6 for day olds and $8 for 2 week olds is too much? All I know is I need to sell them cause they eat sooo much food! I can't afford to feed 25 of them, lol.

I wish it were a little closer...I'm so sick of getting replies to my ads on CL asking if the extra roos are still available and then when I respond saying they are I never hear back again...ever. Its so annoying.
Check on Facebook for one closer to you. There is one in Montgomery county https://www.facebook.com/groups/MohawkValleyPoultrySwap/ and perhaps even near you if you look for it. Have heard about some further south and northeast as well. Inquire at TSC in your area if they host swaps. Many do. Folks come from quite a distance to the Sloansville swap and many pre-sell so they are not dragging animals for a couple of hours and having to take them home again.

I am a part of many of the Ny ones, I have him posted on one or two, but no takers.

It is so nasty out here today...Just when I was feeling better I woke up, went outside to let everyone out and I didn't last out there 5 minutes before I got all stuffy, my eyes started to water. Ugh, I hate the humidity too! I can't even breathe out there. Good news is I got rid of the extra drake yesterday. Still no sign of the other one that took off. Now if only I can get rid of one more rooster...

13 more days on these sizzle eggs. I have 6 that are growing strong and moving around. I threw out the one I was iffy on, it stopped growing and was a black blob. If ALL 6 of these hatch, I'll be happy.

I just hope if they do hatch I get SOME with the frizzled feathering. I STILL don't know if this frizzled sizzle I have is a hen or roo. It isn't crowing yet like its sibling but it does have wattles and a small comb. Sheri said it could very well be a hen so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that one. Guess I better go do some googling of pictures to help me determine.

Sometimes I get so many responses to a CL ad that I can't answer them all. Especially if it's cheap birds. Then they expect to get a pullet for cheap.

I have a friend who just kills his young roosters. I don't have the heart for that. Yet.

I refuse to complain about this weather. I have waited far to long for it. The Ducks are loving the little pool and don't seem bothered by the chickens. I noticed they were eating from the same tub this AM

I was up at 6 cuz I heard it raining and I'd left the lawn mower in the yard with the intentions of using it.

Lynzii, I wish you luck with your eggs. 6 eggs would be good imo. I'm hoping at least a couple of these Del eggs I have under broodies hatch.

DOUGNASH, have we met? One here that is. It's hard to keep up.

If you were closer to me I would get some of them.

Afternoon all. Hot and humid here. Glad I got an early start! Got both the terrorist coop and brat/monsters coop all cleaned out and freshened up. By the time I finished at 11 it was already hot and my broody terrorist hens sitting in the nest boxes were panting. Poor girls. Took 12 5 gallon buckets out of the terrorist coop and dumped them in the run where they are digging craters. I figure its a good way to fill the holes and they can work the stuff into the dirt to enrich it. Girls seemed to like that I put all that out there cause they were happily digging through it all day. I have taken out the black rubber bowls and put the pvc feeder back up in the brats coop. Hopefully this cuts down on the waste and gives them more floor space. De the crap out of both coops. Still have to clean out Little Mans coop and freshen that, then I will be done. Have two broodies sitting on eggs in there so I want to be sure the chicks have a mostly clean environment when they hatch. Speaking of...I have six chicks hatched. Not sure the other eggs are going to do anything but the way things have been going this year I am going to leave them in a couple more days. Who knows, they just might.

Once my broody girls are done raising their chicks, I will be selling Little Man and his 3 girls if anyone is interested. I need to make room for younger silkies for my breeding program. They are a very nice quad of blue bearded silkies and are treated more like pets than anything. They were hatched from Simplysplendidsilkies eggs and are breeder quality 3 year old birds. I will not separate them and they must go to a good forever home. The girls are still laying, just not as much as before. PM me if you are interested.

I will also be selling a porcelain silkie hen who is a year and a half old. She has a double toenail, which is a dq for showing but she is a great broody and momma. She is currently busy sitting on eggs and I wont let her go till she is done raising her chicks. She comes from Geri Gordinas line.

I get so attached to my birds its hard to let them go but if I am going to be serious about what I am doing with them, then I have to let some go in order to continue to improve the lines I have. If I ever hit the lottery, Im in trouble!

Hope everyone had a nice day!

So bummed! I had an australorp pullet up and die on me out of the blue today. :-( Shortly before I took the kids to their baseball games, I noticed her wavering. I picked her up and her crop was squishy. By the time I got back from baseball, she was talons up. :-(

No idea what happened...but I hope she didn't have something contagious. And double darn because most of my current group in the brooder are cockerels.
