Th
ethe tornado hit right around the corner from me. My daughters BFF lost her roof and window of her bedroom. She wasn't home. It's been a crazy couple weeks. I have lost 8 of my juvie birds to a hawk. Even whith ppl in the yard. I'm in the middle of building a covered run. Just now a hawk came after my adult SF I chased it with a rock and stick. Idk what to do. Can I shoot a hawk? Red tailed hawk. Or what are my options. This is every couple days for the past two weeks.
I had a problem with Hawks also. I had to keep the birds in the coop until I could put a net over their run. Seems to have worked. Red tail Hawks are protected so you are not supposed to shoot them.

Not trying to be snarky here but ALL birds of prey (owls, hawks, eagles, falcons) are protected by the federal government under somes "law" or another.

It is illegal to kill them. You can get a permit from Encon to encourage them to move on via loud noises and other non-lethal harrassment techniques. (Someone once said that you can get a permit to kill a bird of prey that is killing your "livestock". While chickens qualify as livestock, very few of us count on those chickens for our sole income, so a kill permit might be hard for most of us to get)

We have been having quite a good deal of success with encouraging crows to live near us. Crows drive hawks away. So far this free range season (fingers tightly crosses as I type this) we have lost no chickens to hawk attack. Last year between the two families keeping chickens right here on my road we lost over 15 birds to hawk attack. (The neighbor added some more cover plantings and a couple crates on their sides for her birds to duck under for cover. I added nothing to my set up except feeding the crows on the far side of the yard all winter)

What eggs did you get at the chickenstock?
I got Lav. Orp. from Sue and Golden Cuckoo Marans from Tab and Travis :)
Got some questions about feed.
1 Does anyone in CNY know a good place to buy feed in bulk? looking to maximize profits if possible, or at least minimize my price per egg.
2 does anyone here feed fermented feed to egg birds, and if so how young can i start?
look up Cherry Hill feeds in Fulton. He sells Poulin Grains, he does bulk deliveries. We get our horse and chicken feed from him. His name is Jeff. Poulin is great feed.

I see you're in Poultney! I'm just outside Fair Haven. I bet we're less than 15 minutes apart

Love Fair Haven! Go Camping there every year in the Park. Such a wonderful place to live.

Morning all. Rainy and cooler here today. This was much needed rain as everything was so dry. Its the good kind, a nice slow steady soaking rain. Of course this means mosquitoes too. Lucky me. The girls are very noisy this morning laying eggs. I saw Master Timothy and his mommy last night when I pulled in the driveway. He had just finished giving the Bawk Bawks and Babies some popcorn. He brings them treats of some sort every day, whether its veges or popcorn. I have expect my chickens to just start roosting over at their house, waiting for him to come out! My broodies are sitting tight so I should have chicks soon. My silkie eggs came yesterday so I will have one last hatch going of silkies with some fresh lines for my breeding pens. Going to try moving the brats into the terrorist coop this weekend. They are big enough now to hold their own with the girls.

Closing tonight and hoping that all the brats stay away. Ta for now.

I have two broodies. One has been sitting for a while, but in different places. In her most recent location she had three eggs I had marked, but there were only two of them this morning, and she had a few others...and when I was cleaning, someone had taken over her spot and she was in another box. Enough of this. The other broody had been sitting nicely on three wooden eggs. But someone else was in her box. Then there was a furor and someone was running around with what could only be a partial egg shell. I am going to move the broodies to a separate little coop. Have to clean it up and set it near the coop.

Grrrrrrr.
