NY chicken lover!!!!

Welcome, Kristylynn! Th,ere are lots of good and helpful folks here, and we love to hear of and see pictures of others chickens. What kinds of chickens do you have?

I cleaned out the pen and freshened it up with some fresh shavings after the sun came out. Then, of course, it had to pour rain again. Grrrrrr....

No, I didn't, but I think you were smart to not click on the link!

Well, it was an accident, but if you can wait a little, it might be a kind thing to consider. But I know you are nervous about the fox. Some of the nests are very tiny and/or well tucked in to the thickets. We have a chipping sparrow nest on the very edge of one of our juniper bushes near our walkway. Even though I know exactly where it is, some times it takes me several seconds to find and focus on it. The mother bird is nearly invisible when she is tucked down on her little ones (they just hatched a few days ago). The cup of the nest is not a whole lot wider than a Dixie cup!

Sorry to hear, Rancher, and I don't know. On a horse, this would likely mean colic, but obviously, horses and chickens are worlds apart. I don't know if chickens can get gas, bloat or torsion (twisting) issues like horses do! I hope she makes a good turn-around soon. It seems there's always something to worry about.

TOB

It was near the house area. Not in the woods. Too I was reading about Bumble Bees and how they like Tufted grass areas to build her nest. Apparently the Queen is the only one who lives to see spring. All workers die. She only lays a few eggs too.

As for poor Buckwheat it may be internal laying and sites I've looked at mentioned 4-5 year olds and that would be her. There is nothing I can do except put her down and I can't do it. At least not to her. She will die eventually. All the problems it could be are fatal.

@glasshen thank you. I'm a first time chicken mom. I've got 3 tetra tint, 3 red?, 3 silver laced wyandotte, 3 silkies, and 3 white leghorn. Also 2 Peking ducks

Something weird is going on here....all my crows are gone! I've had crows here for years, and through the winter, but now. Not one! Now, I'm worried about hawks.
Anyone else lose their crows?
Around here the crows chase the hawks away. I had crows nesting in an evergreen tree on my property & haven't seen a hawk in months. Tho I have not seen a crow in a few days. I figure they must be out teaching the young to how to eat

Got Mud???? I got lots of mud! Holy mud, I have mud on top of mud! The terrorist run and brat/monsters run is just horrible. I hope we get the sun they promised us for the next two days to dry it out some. Im going to have to haul lots of chipped wood in to fill the craters that they dug and to soak up some of this mud. Thats my sunday project. Have to work today. Only got 4 eggs yesterday from the terrorists. Wish I knew what was going on as this is making me mad. Only 10 eggs the day before that and 6 the day before that. I have egg customers waiting on eggs. I will have to check vents and see who is not laying.

TOB--nice pic of the sparrow. I have a phoebe under my kitchen deck on a nest with babies. I only looked once because I didnt want to disturb her. She doesnt mind when we step out onto the deck but get nervous when we are on the ground around the deck.

RE: Eggs -- I'm wondering if it's the low light this entire week long because of crappy, wet, gloomy weather? Only thing I can think of. My girls are chugging along at a pretty decent clip, but maybe not quite as prolific as last week.

Thx for the comment on the sparrow pic. I like to check on the babies once a day and try to do so when mom is off scouting up bugs. I think there are 2, possibly 3 youngsters. They are incredibly tiny. I chase my kids and dogs away from play time near that shrub. I'm driving them crazy. You'd think I was the protective mom, haha. Phoebes are great birds to have around. Insect assassins!

This morning's count is 1 brown leghorn, 2 Wellsummers hatched. Another Wellie was zipped last night but did not make progress by this morning, still wiggling and peeping but looked stuck. Pulled it out and broke some shell back to find the membrane shrinking and drying around. Took all the shell off one side and finished zipping and little baby was happy to pop it's head out. Set it back in the bator and back to actively hatching itself out.

Good move! Hope the challenged little one makes good catch-up strides!

I too am suddenly getting less eggs, 5 yesterday. 14 birds, 1 roo, 3 broodies, that leaves 10 who could be laying....50%, hmmm. But yesterday Stewie was behaving nicely, but uttering genteel clucks. I truly hope she doesn't really expect to be broody too. She is one of my originals, and close to my heart, but was a wild child. I can only imagine what an adventure broodiness would be.

Like I was wondering "aloud" to Pharm......maybe because of the cruddy, dark weather this week? Less light? Today was supposed to be so nice. Ha! Where's that sunshine???!!

I have never been stung by a bumblebee -- been stung by just about everything else that flies. Recently, a bumblebee crashed into my leg. I was wearing shorts and waited for the sting. Nope....it didn't do a thing except fly away. When yellow jackets crash into you, they almost always sting.

I am really very sorry to hear this about Buckwheat. I know she is a special bird. I hope she does not suffer for long, Rancher.
