NY chicken lover!!!!

I keep thinking that. I may call tomorrow and just say they all died. I just want replacements ASAP. My little boys are sad. Our surviving chicken sleeps almost constantly - not sure if that is normal or if she's damaged from whatever happened to the other three.

Start them on sugar water but they do sleep a lot. They are babies. Let her rest, don't keep picking her up for a few day. A pet won't hurt though and an encouraging word.

Leahlefler, I'm in falconer. Do you care what breeds?

You can still do the DoA
Kinmera - I am calling Meyer in the morning and will see how soon they can get chicks to me. I don't really care what breed as long as they are fairly docile (i.e. won't peck the daylights out of my poor Buff Orpington). The only thing is that I can't have roosters, so if we end up with a roo I"ll have to get rid of him. We're up Southwestern Dr. by the school, so not far from you at all!

I have 4 that are only a couple weeks old. But not sure on gender. They are all either pure Plymouth Rock or a rock cross

I also have an incubator full due to hatch in 2 weeks

You should come see the set up sometime

Read the blog post and comments. Agree with most of the origina posting, but the comments were off base many times. Don't feed chicken? Or Meat in general? Citrus?

I find that my flock eat things they can eat and avoid what they shouldn't eat. They eat every white berry off the bush out back..wouldn't eat them.....probably poisionous to humans.

I started to do some research and came across a video that looks interesting. I'll watch it later.

There may be varying opinions on what each means but I'm sure the state has it's rules. I suppose it's what you choose for them to mean.

NEW YORK - Whether they buy "cage-free," "free range," "pasture-raised" or just "eggs," a growing number of people are concerned with where and how their food is produced. A new bill in Congress would make egg-labeling mandatory, as well as adding more humane living standards for millions of egg-laying hens in the United States.

Egg cartons currently do not have to be labeled for sale, said Paul Shapiro, vice president for farm animal protection at the Humane Society of the United States, and those that are labeled can be confusing. He said nine out of 10 cartons are from hens that live in "battery cages."

"These are the cages that are so cramped that each bird has less space than a single sheet of paper on which to live for more than a year before she's slaughtered," he said. "It really is difficult to imagine a more miserable existence."

Shapiro said egg-labeling options can include:

"Cage free," which means birds are able to stretch and are not in cages.

"Free-range," which could mean hens have some outdoor access.

"Pasture-raised," which should mean that hens are laying eggs outside.

There are no current industry rules and the living standards are not always clear, but Shapiro said any of those options is preferable to battery cages, which already have been banned in the European Union.

Yeh I know ..comments were kind of strange ....If chickens werent supposed to eat meat they wouldnt eat those yummie bugs ..
I put some orange rinds in the coop / run for air freshening ...they disappeared ...I wonder what ate them ...LOL
Weird stuff they eat - I caught my chickens eating Styrofoam in the back lot that had been broken by a tractor going through.
So I tried to pick it all up ...you would have thought it was chicken candy.. I had to run them off .

I'm in Prattsburgh, NY. Anyone around this area on here?? Would love to meet some fellow chicken lovers! :)

We're not in Prattsburgh, but just a bit north of you in Benton. My son's Little League team played against two of the Prattsburgh teams this year, lol.

Hello from East Aurora NY!
Welcome!

Welcome also. I live in Hornby, not so far from you. Many moons ago I used to go someplace in Prattsburgh picking strawberries.

I haven't posted in a while but we FINALLY got our chicks. I ordered from Meyer hatchery and they shipped yesterday/arrived today at noon. 3 out of four of the chicks were dead on arrival...I am so, so sad. Something must have happened in shipping. I have a lone, surviving Buff Orpington. She is sad but alive... a bit wobbly but she has had something to drink and eat.

Here is our lone survivor.

If anyone knows of a person selling chicks in the Jamestown area, I'd like to get her a friend. :(
I'm so far away from you and just gave away 2 day old chicks to someone that only had 1. I hope you've found someone by now. Just 1 doesn't fare so well. I'm so sorry.
