NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning All,
We're in MA and I'm anxious to get home to my duckers and Orps. We viewed a house yesterday in MA that we really liked. The owners came down from NH last minute to show us it. We had found it on CL at 2:30pm, called them and were at the property at 4:30. Glad they did too because get this...the woman who owned the house used to raise chickens there! She even still has a coop and run set up down at the end of the property with electricity and running water right by a shed! Now I say shed, but it's really like a small barn. It would be great for us. They really liked us too and probably would have signed with us right then and there but we have some questions for them that DH and I discussed last night at dinner. I guess I like it but the house could use some updating and that's keeping me from absolutely loving it? We're so used to being in something "new" for the last 8 years. We just wonder if they would allow us to update bathrooms and stuff like that, paint maybe, etc.

We have about 5 properties we're viewing today, one in Ma on a lake and 4 in CT. Wish us luck!

Haha! I agree. Didn't know you had that many eggs or that she was already sitting on some, otherwise I wouldn't have suggested that. I keep picturing your bantam sitting on 42 eggs and it cracks me up :)
Something like this?

Well I had a bad surprise this Morning . A dead Hen in the coop ..no sign of any trauma . I think she died in her sleep . Goldie was 2 1/2 years old ...a hatchery chick ..She had a very good life here . She was a part of the group of four of the 1st chickens we got .
Gramma I am so sorry to hear you lost a hen. It's like losing a member of the family.

I am sorry for your loss. Lord only know why these things happen. I've got Buckwheat with her swollen stomach still going on and another hen with a lump and skinny everywhere else. Can't say what is wrong with either only guess, but I don't have the heart to put them down.

To own chickens is to suffer. Such is life.

We have Carpenter Bees all around the house here. Lots of little holes they have drilled too. They will reuse holes. I don't mind them so much b/c they don't appear to be anywhere near aggressive no matter how close you get to them or their holes - and they pollinate =)
We have carpenter bees, too - they like to drill holes into the kids' swingset. We do fill up those holes and get rid of the bees on the swing set just in case someone gets stung. We let the rest be.

Oh, I am so sorry! Heart breaking - I hope you can take comfort in the fact that she had a loving and comfortable home with you. So sad.

One of my girls has been acting weird for a week. She is sleepy looking most of the time and she spends most of the time with her head lowered instead of walking around with her head held high. She is eating and drinking, but her and my other 2 reds aren't laying really good right now. Not sure what is going on, but we'll see at least it isn't just her that isn't laying at the moment.

The one chick of mine that hatched is doing fine. I moved it into the brooder. I had a second one that pipped and started, but overnight it gave up and died. I should have helped it out, but I thought that it should be able to do it on it's own. I think what happened was the chick that had hatched moved the egg when she was walking around and when she did the chick turned it's head away from the hole and suffocated. I had 2 more due to hatch. I water tested one and there was nothing. When I opened it the chick had died before it pipped. The other one when I picked it up to check it there was a little hole in the side so I put it back. I keep running upstairs to check to see if it is out yet. In the mean time my one little chick is sitting next to the mirror waiting. I still have 2 more that are due to hatch on Wednesday so we'll see what happens..

Oh and I think that my frizzle Jessie and my white silkie Cleo might be going broody. I have been siting a few more eggs aside if they are going to stay sitting I'll give them some. I may give them the new chicks..not sure what I plan on doing...Maybe I'll give them a few duck eggs..

I will not even go into the irony that you have a frizzle named Jessie. That is SOOOOO appropriate!
