NY chicken lover!!!!

Oh, poor chickie. I hope it makes it, but I do think sometimes there's just something wrong with the ones that don't make it.

A question on pasty butts, since my chicks are coming in today (sorted through Buffalo according to tracking)... does anyone ever pre-treat chick butts with vaseline to prevent it in the first place? I have some Aquaphor and thought about putting some on their little heinies to prevent it from happening....
you might want to re-think aquaphor, it contains alittle bit more than vaseline..just my 2 cents

Active Ingredients: Petrolatum (“Also known as Vaseline. This is used in cold creams, other emollients, and other skin creams. It is a purified combination of hydrocarbons made from petroleum. It helps to soften the skin in the same way that other emollients do, but is much less expensive.” http://www.totalskincare.com/library/totalskincare_p_petrolatum.html
Inactive Ingredients: Mineral Oil; Ceresin; Lanolin Alcohol; Panthenol; Glycerin; Bisabolol

I find a lot of things I'm just learning as I go. I just had my first bumble foot experience yesterday and I was a mess while doing the surgery. I had done a bit of research before I got chickens but I found I just freaked myself out more about things that "could happen." Then when something finally did I just did all my research and figured it out...don't worry too much!

Agreed. I'm not doing anything - just watching them. They seem to be happy enough. Eating, drinking, pooping, pecking, and sleeping.

Here is what I'm dealing with. The little chick that could's leg. It is getting around alright and is eating, drinking, and pooping, but once it stands still it's leg starts to twist. It seems alright till I try to stretch it then it cries. After a few minutes it is fine again. Should I try to put it in a cup to give it time to try to streghtn it or is there something else that I could try...or should I just give up and throw in the white towel?

These little sizzles were to be my kids pets.

I hate to lose this one.

Oh this talk of sick chicks has me nervous... My babies get here next Tuesday and I am freaking out!! Time to get the books out and reread them I feel like I know nothing about chickens!! Oh I feel like I'm a first time mommy about to bring her baby home for the first time

The 'first time' can be nerve wracking, but generally things go much better than anticipated. Enjoy their antics while they are small, they are great psychotherapy!

Does it appear to be in pain while it's moving around or just when you try to straighten it? If it's eating/drinking etc. ok - I think I would give it a bit more time to sort itself out - never can tell what a determined chick can do!

Ahh, no. Use something ediable if you insist on pre-treating a problem that may not happen. Olive oil? But my whole theory on putting ANYTHING on a bird is it is going to make the other birds curious and the only thing that they have to use to satisfy that curisoity is their BEAK...which leads to pecking. Pecking leads to blood. Blood leads to more pecking. Excessive pecking can lead to death in small chicks.
