NY chicken lover!!!!

I was at Harbor Freight today. They have a 6' X 8' green house. Hard plastic sides. For $299.00. Minus the 20% off coupon and it's less than $300.00 $239.00 plus tax $19.12 = $258.12

Of course you'd have to modify it a bit to make it secure as the door is a slider. I'm tempted to buy one. Any comments on the idea?

Morning Everyone,
So the other day I decided to place an ad on CL looking for "Chicken Housing" or what I described in my details, a yard or land to keep my small flock on. I've gotten a couple of emails back from people who say they'd love to help me and allow me to keep my chickens at their place. Two people are an hour away the third I haven't heard back from yet. Now with them being an hour away they both have offered to care for them for me as well so that I don't have to drive there every day, maybe just on weekends or once a week. But this has me thinking now. Sure it sounds great that they'd be an hour from me instead of 4.5 but at the same time, I wonder if these people are just looking for "free" nice quality birds. I guess I'd have to meet with them and get a feel for what they're like. I'd have to draw up a contract LOL

Seriously - yes! If you move your birds onto their land, possession is 9/10ths' of the law.....and for private property (birds) you would probably have to resort to a small claims court if they disputed your claim.
I'm afraid I'm not very trusting of people these days......they are probably very nice people...

I've tried to explain that things have changed with the PO but folks still insist on ordering chicks in small amounts. The last three ordered I received were late and many poor chicks lost their lives.

Please try to find someone local. If you get roos there is always someone who will take them off your hands. You could pay a bit more and get older but sexed birds.

Or find someone to go in on an order with you and and order from a bigger hatchery. I ordered 25 chicks from Ideal and all made it alive in February. But that was in 2008 before the PO went down the tubes. Hatcheries are NOT better than individual breeders. Many times when there is an outbreak of disease it's the hatcheries.

You could also write your congressman to require the PO to give higher priority to shipped animals.

Back in 1915 the PO wanted to NOT deliver periodicals to rural areas, perhaps that is their goal now to not deliver live animals.

Agreed! I got more birds locally form Natureberry farm (

) and have been very pleased with the girls. I will get more next year when I've sorted out the 'old ladies' as to who is laying and who will be stewing.........

Natureberry gets most of their chick's from Ideal. What you really should do is find a local breeder, not just someone that hatches. You'll get the best birds from people who actually breed to the standard.

Seriously? I think these are silkies we're talking about. No one in their right mind would fight to KEEP silkies.

Too you just have to use your imagination to keep a few chickens in the garage. As long as you can keep them from view of the neighbors.

Heck a parrot isn't much smaller than a silky and many are bigger.

Hey I agree with this whole heartedly. I don't keep hatchery stock and consider them inferior to non hatchery stock. Some folks have put a lot of work into their birds. Hatcheries are the puppy mills for chickens.

You won't find CR's this size from a hatchery.

His brother got killed by a dog, now I just have 3 pullets. They will be laying age in a month or so. I'm really bummed! I was hoping to breed them. They are Wade/Davis lines and the pullets are looking great. I hope I can find a roo for them
