NY chicken lover!!!!

I was reading a lot about that today on this website:
http://landforgood.org/resources/toolbox/toolbox-farm-seekers/?gclid=CN-87pPZpcACFc1_MgodLlkA3w

It sounds good an all, problem is I only have the 6 silkies/sizzles, they're not the best layers. However, if I could get an acre and do whatever with it - add LF flocks, maybe a pair of goats? I would give them whatever they wanted from that livestock! I'll keep that in mind though. Maybe shoot an email to this realtor and see if she knows of anyone looking to the lower the tax price on their land they have because they are not already "farming" on it.

The rule in NY to qualify for Ag Exemption, the farmer needs to produce $10,000 in ag product annually. That would be a lot of expensive chickens.

we had a hawk attack today ...do they only like Sumatras ?
it attacked my 3 month old Yap Yap...Chickens are screaming ..
I run out I see Yap Yap & the Hawk doing somersaults on my lawn .
I am yelling / growling & chasing it off my property
Yapyap is missing quite a few feathers on the back ..a little shaken ..But okay ...GRRRR

this is the 1st scene of the crime ...it looked like it made 2 attempts

Oh Deborah, glad you intervened and Yap yap is still with you. Nature is so terrifying sometimes. Luv, I may just do that, am having bloodwork this morning, what kind of fool goes to the Fair after fasting? Breakfast should be my first stop. I am sipping BLACK coffee. I so hate coffee without milk.

wow. I am so glad you were there to help. Thankfully she is ok. We have a manged fox lurking on our block. He got about 4 on the block. I am hoping my 5 ft chain link deters him. Best of luck with you little lady overcoming the horrific experience.

Good morning everyone!

Lynzi that is a cool idea and from what i have seen it works out pretty good.

Gramma ugh I am glad u were able to go out there.

All this talk of the fair i really want to go. I got so much going on.

Chickens are good ducks are gettin big. Mama is still on here eggs they are due to hatch approx sept 3 i decided against checking the eggs n leaving her be. I put up netting n as per ur advice i moved the food so she has room to stretch poop n eat.

My broody hen would explain recent attacks on my son by our roo lol he plays a major role in taking care of the chickens. Now that she is in our gonna be rabbit pen all has settled down.

I have seen 2 juvenile skunks 2 juvenile raccoons n 1 weasel. These sightings have been within 100 yards of dewey n lake ave in Rochester. Which is near my house. I got a trap set up so hopefully no skunks lol.

Have a great day

Morning all. Crazy work schedule, mother moving, daughters (2 of them) moving have made my life crazy. Hope everyone is well and their cheeps are healthy. Dh got some good pics on the game cam of various critters that visited the carcass pile he put out in the woods after processing. Like across the road and deep into the woods. Had one bear (didnt touch them), a rather large coon, a large fisher cat and a bunch of turkey vultures. As long as they stay over there, they are safe.

Clyde may have to be culled. He has sustained a leg/foot injury which has him limping pretty good. No external wounds. Not sure how he did it. He cant run over to defend his girls from the other roos if they try to get them. He mates but with difficulty. He refuses to be confined and the injury isnt getting better. I feel bad for him.

My broody silkie girls are driving me nuts. They refuse to break and sit all day in the coop. Poor Legolas sits all day in the coop just to have company.

Off and running again. Ta for now.

Blessing that YapYap made it - now Yappie will be extra cautious and it will be catching to the others ! :) At least that is what happens here after a close call. Sometimes the flock gets a little complacent .....

Morning all ....

My 6 broody-hatched peeps are what ? 2-3 weeks old now and all doing fine. Two mommas.

A week ago one lone chick hatched out - I had to fight to get the two hens sitting on that nest for one of them to be momma and leave the other eggs. Lone peep was ignored when out of the nest. I finally (TWO DAYS LATER) had to kick the hens out - put the remaining eggs under another hen and break up the nest ... then they paid attention to lone chick who really needed to eat and drink by that time.

OK - after an hour or so - they started to momma lone chickie .... Two mommas - one chick. Sigh. AND the first night went well - the second night the TWO mommas were inside the hoop coop - lone chickie was OUTSIDE cold and peeping - because all three brain-light fools would look through the wire but not go AROUND TO THE DOOR. So nearly dark while locking up - I had to pick up lone peep and walk it inside - I put it down by the two hens and it burrowed under in less than a second. SHEESH

But all has gone well for 3 days straight now.

Wow, I haven't been on in a while! Hope everyone and their chickens are doing well.
Got to visit my new Identical twin Nephews last week!
Came home a week later and all the chickens were accounted for...DH decided against having that roast chicken every night.
One however was/is broody. I do not want any more chicks this year! If I can't break her I was thinking about having her foster some meaties.
Have a great day!

Well If you lived near me I'd be more than happy to let you use my land.

Some people have to much time on their hands. We had an old claw foot in our old house and do you think we could get someone to come and take it away. FOR FREE!? Nope. We smashed it in two and dragged it to the road. Somewhere out there is a person with a statue of Mary in need of a bathtub.
