Morning All,
Well I discovered that Stella has apparently been going thru another molt and that would explain all the feathers on the ground each evening that I'm there locking up. She had a whole bunch of pin feathers around her head and neck that I noticed this morning while watching them. Feather Fixer much be kicking in ;-). Ella on the other hand looks great. Little Fella, who Luv hatched out this summer, has me guessing his gender. His comb has gone from from red to pink-it's even lighter than his mother's. Also it hasn't gotten any bigger. I know they don't grow big that quickly since my newest Roo still has a short comb and wattles but still. And his wings wrap around his whole body so it's tough to see how those feathers around the tail are growing but I don't see any pointy feathers yet that would fall down around the tail indicating Roo. I forget are those considered the "saddle feathers? Or is what a hen has considered saddle feathers?

I agree there is some Brwn Leghorn in there. The white lobes are a give away.

I would try a motion detector light, music is good - although there have been studies that show chickens don't 'enjoy' heavy rock (!) it upsets them and they lay slightly less, hang up streamers, pie pans etc. anything to distract/annoy the owl, good luck

Well now you could use the light in one side and an outlet in the other so a radio would come on when it's tripped.

morning everyone ..i have been noticing a few of my girls are getting their butts picked at and my one girl is down to the skin ..i started to use the pick no more product and was wondering if any of you have used it before and what results you had with it ..


as far as hawks or owls go i would try those crow decoyes they sell at some garden shops ..i like the idea of the motion detecter and the music coming on ..i just seen a hawk this morning flying over the coop ..the birds all went running for the coop ..i wonder how they no its a bird of danger and run in but when the crows fly over they dont go running ..levon herds them in and he is the last to go in when something like a hawk goes over ..

i noticed a hole in my chicken wire yesterday ..it was in the same corner i seen that , or what i thought was a fisher cat ..i am now thinking it was a coon ..either way i should really try and get some diffrent fencing ...

leghorn was what i thought as well ..those big white earlobes are a sure give away ..pretty bird anyways..its funny to see evereyone has roo's to get rid of .ya never see someone say free hens ..lol

I am curious. I haven't been following the posts. I had a few chickens die this fall as well. I thought it might be marek,s disease and decided if another one died I would have a necropsy done. Your not that far from me(as the crow flies) and I wonder if their is something going on?

It's just very odd. What's the strangest part to me is it seems to be the girls/guys in the same coop. I have two coops one with 1 year olds and one with the 2 year olds and it seems to be sticking with the 2 year olds. They just get very lethargic and stand around with their eyes closed and droopy. The rooster as well. Their poo looks fine except it's a little green. I'm at a loss...I'm going to try cornell today and see what they have to say. I'll get a box ready to ship a bird for a necropsy (hopefully).

AQhA - I got a poorly looking hen today also. Just one, everyone else is fat and happy. It is one of my 2 year old red hens. Walking around fluffed up, some nasty green liquid poo came out. Did see her pick at food though. Hubby wonders if she laid the monster egg. I know production birds won't last long, so wouldn't be surprised if she ends up passing. Reason I wanted to cull the oldest hens. Still have 8 doz eggs in the fridge too.

The two of mine who are/were sick (the one that past and the one that looks bad now) were 2 year old red production from TSC...same exact symptoms and they were/are eating...but had the liquid green poo and puffed up and lethargic. Everyone else is running around happily.

Evening all. Got all my culls canned today. 7quart jars full. Saved some breast meat for later this week. Have it curing in the fridge with some white wine vinegar and citrus. Should be tasty! Got the back coop cleaned out and all the stuff packed into it. All ready for spring. The two groups are still working out the pecking order. The Duke is still giving the barred rock girls a hard time. My silkies were very happy to be out and about today. I took some time to sit with the cheeps this evening, listening to them and the surrounding wildlife begin their nightly ritual. Makes me feel calm.

Aqha--I have (or had) red sexlinks and they are pretty much done after 2 laying. I just finished processing 7 of them. I did have a couple that were acting that way. They would go through periods of lethargy then be normal. I didnt find anything abnormal when I processed them. Their bones seemed to be finer than the others. Might be time to process yours.

Lynzii, congrats on the pup. Hope he works out.

Busy Day here trying to catch up on chores that didn't get done due to being sick.
Mowed some grass and one compost pile is full up.
Put up a make shift, half hoop to store shavings instead of in the garage.
Covered yard benches and have more to do.

Have to empty all clay flower pots and get them stored before the freeze.
Have to cover garlic with hay but I think I have to wait til a freeze. Don't know what to do if it snows thursday.
Roses have to be covered, but you know it's going to get warm before the real cold hits.
Snow tires have to be put on DW's car.
Have to check snow blower and make sure it's working. The plug has to be fixes but It will have to wait til I can afford it. It has a pull cord.
Coops need to be cleaned too.
Still have not finished the exterior nest boxes on the large coop.

I don't want to put the plastic up for winter on the runs. They get too warm.

Oh and Currant bushes need pruning and shoring up. Not sure what to do about the Jostaberry bushes, but will probably cut them back.

The cement cover on the gray well is broken and falling in. It's not deep but I'm not sure I can pull all the cement off to put a new cover on it. It's about 2' feet deep with water.

We've been having trouble with the septic again, but I think it's due to the TP. Target Brand seems to work best. It breaks down much better. A friend came by a while ago with some groceries and the TP. My point being if you're having trouble with your septic, it might be the TP is not degrading good enough.

Rancher--This is The Duke, a heritage breed rir.. Taken about 3 months ago. You should see him now! I will have to get new pics.

I felt like I had a constant knife through my gut just below my diaphram going through to my back. Sometimes it would radiate up to my shoulder. It would get worse with eating, no matter what kind of food I ate. Sometimes it was in my right side as well. Had an ultrasound, mri and then the hida test, which showed it wasnt working. You usually have to do the first two before getting the hida, which gives a difinitive answer. It can make you feel sick to your stomach as well. It is the constant, unending pain that really grinds you down. My fellow technician is currently going through this. I hope you dont have it.
