NY chicken lover!!!!

With Great Danes they do a procedure to their ears so they will stand up straight. They do it to a few other breeds as well...I personally like them floppy and natural..but man he is one handsome dude!!!

Some people do it to Boxers as well, I didn't, but he did come with a docked tail. They do the tails when they are like a couple days old so it isn't as bad.
One hadsome dog, I love the color!
I imagine you are anyway, but make sure you feed him large breed dog food at least until he is close to full grown.
When I got my boxer pup (before the wife and kids of course) I fed him Eukanuba large breed puppy ( WOW was that expensive!) While I lived on ramen noodles and the 'Beast' ( milwakees best beer ). He ended up about twenty pounds heavier in muscle than two of his brothers my friends had were. The expensive good dog food also makes them easier to house train, they only poop about once a day. I dont think mine ever had a accident, but we always spent the majority of the day outside and I was self employed at the time and he was always with me. Well he did pee on my chest once, he couldn't get me up (too hung over I guess) licking my face and wineing. Boy did I get up when he peed on my chest though! Lol! He was little then about the size of a baseball, ended up over a hundred pounds!

Morning Everyone!
Picked up the new pup yesterday instead of Friday. Here he is enjoying the fire last night

400

Not sure if I mentioned yet but we are calling him Jagger.

Ever seen the Disney show "The Ugly Dachshund"? Just remembered you had a doxie, found it hilarious :D

grow more ? he looks huge now ..What did they do to his ears ? they dont naturally stick up like that do they

Yes he is huge now Gramma! But he is only 4mos old and has a whole lot of growing to do still! The woman who was suppose to purchase him was going to show him. They can be shown with or without their ears being cropped-it's more of a personal preference these day. But when this breed originated they cropped the ears to keep the dogs from getting injured while they were working/hunting what they were bred to do. Dobermans have the same thing done -they're ears aren't naturally pointy.

Large breed dog commercial brand food can be very dangerous to a Dane's health.
He is actually on a strict diet of Diamond Naturals adult dog food. The protein levels in his food cannot exceed 23% otherwise he will grow too fast and that can lead to health problems. He gets 2.5-3 cups in the morning and 2.5-3 cups in the evening. There are couple of breeders who I know keep their dogs on a raw meat diet. I'm planning on switching my dachshund over to Diamond Naturals too just we're not buying two different brands. He was on Blue Buffalo but even that isn't healthy for Danes. He's doing quite well as far as the potty training goes. If I feed him I take him out right after and he goes. Same with water-if I catch him drinking I take him out within 5-10mins and he goes right away and heads back for the door. I'm kinda happy he IS 4months old already and we got him after the "puppy" stages of potty training and crying thru the night lol

Evening all. Temp is dropping outside. Had to speak to the cheeps when I went to lock them up. Duke was a little nervous when I walked by the coop and he didnt like me shining to flashlight into the coop to check on everyone. I think they are beginning to work out the pecking order in that coop. Today wasnt too bad but its looking more and more like I will be missing turkey day. Gotta love retail.

Lynzi--jagger is just too adorable. Cant wait to see what the beast looks like when he grows up, Did you know they were used for boar hunting? There is a couple in texas who use danes to hunt wild pigs to rid them off farmers and others lands. They have a beautiful dane named Riddik. They call him 20 minute Riddik because he always finds and grabs a hog in 20 minutes after being sent out. He is amazing. Yes, they have kevlar body armor for all their dogs to protect them from those tusks.

Rancher--eggs and bread huh? Change your feed or brand of bread lately? I can only eat my eggs now that they are on non-gmo feed.

Have a good evening everyone.

Yes! I read that's what they were bred for when I was researching the whole ear cropping thing. That's how I found out they cropped their ears to keep them from getting injured. I would have been for the natural look of their ears if I were getting an 8wk old puppy but after seeing how handsome his father and grandfather look in the show ring, I'm glad they are cropped.
