Anyone near Albany/Delmar/Voorheesville/East Greenbush/ etc. with hatching eggs they'd like to sell or trade? I have 33 eggs in the incubator right now, due to hatch Monday or Tuesday and I can tell this is going to be addicting! Would be looking for eggs to set mid-week next week. If I can't find any, I'll just hatch my own mutts again!!
I have barnyard mixes in there (Golden Comet, Leghorn, Dixie Rainbow, Barred Rock, etc.) but would like to hatch out some cool purebred chicks now that I'm pretty sure this incubator works!!

Sounds good as well. I'll definitely be interested they're my sons 4h birds. I can wait til chickenstock. Have we made any decisions on days yet?

i have a crawl space under the house were the pipes are ..and lets just say i have gotten a little girth to me in my aging ..lol and am not sure i fit under there anymore ..but you are right , i need to wrap them and maybe have a heattape wrapped around them or maybe one of those bulbs ..i dont no why they would build a house and put the toilit on an outside wall ..but i guess its pretty common in these small homes..the toilits the only thing froze this morning..i already fired up the hairdryer....it was almost noon before everything broke free yesterday ..

Could you send someone else under there & just supervise the job ( wife or kid ? )

North East Poultry Congress, held every 3rd weekend in January in Springfield, MA. They have a huge show, and an equally huge sales area. The booths are on the pricy side, so sellers usually have nice stock for sale. I hatch all December & usually sell out in 3 hours. Its a great place to buy and sell, and also see some nice birds in the show. I am brinnging Silkies, Marans.

Sorry about your pipes. We used to have some that would freeze when it got this cold. So far so goodin this house. We took the insulation out of that channel so the warm air from the basement could travel up and help to moderate the temp. Also made using the hair drier easier!
Yesterday the chickens came out to eat and the door blew shut so some of them were huddled on the step for a few minutes. I happened to look out right after taking off my heavy duty clothes. I ran out and opened the door everyone rushed in except the ones getting the last crumbles. So the dishes went in too. This morning I fed them in the coop, and when it gets a little warmer I will let them out. They do fine when it is in the teens, but sub zero is tough for them.

My mom had one pipe to her main bathroom freeze last week; luckily, no burst pipe(s). We finally got it defrosted, so to speak. Cringe every time the mercury flirts with 0. It's uncivilized, I tell you!!

Just HATE it...

yeah i agree the below zero is tough on them .i have to say i must be venting the coop out better this yr tho ..no signs of frostbite ..[knocking on wood ].. frozen water every few hrs is not fun either ..but i figure i have to collect eggs anyways before they freeze ..i want to throw them some corn but everytime i do they go back to picking on my roo..


its always after you get your coat hung up and your boots off that ya have to run back out ..

I agree the single digits and below are rough -- throw in that brutal stretch of wind and it's beyond rough. My girls just chose to stay in one or two days, even though their pullet-shut door was open. The coop is plenty roomy for just 4 birds, and I had just changed bedding before the deep freeze, so they were pretty content. So far, no frost bite. I think because I have a few less birds this winter, the air stays dryer inside the coop.

My Maran hens have white butts and research suggests it's gleet caused by an upset in Flora in the gut. I have no idea what upset Flora or even that she was in their gut.


Good lord is it cold out. I saw a dog stuck to a firehydrant.

You made me laugh with your one liners, Rancher. I could almost hear the ba-da-dum of the drum. On a more serious note, I do hope your Marans tummy issues clear. My Marans had that problem earlier in the season and then took ill. (She is better now, as you may recall.) I did soak her in a warm bath (bum end only) and then blow dried her and gave her a night inside. That seemed to help. To be honest, I haven't used Mothers in a while, and maybe that would be a good idea. Or feed yogurt? Not sure mine would eat it; they've never had it. That would help to balance the flora count in your hens, perhaps?

I know this isn't the most popular animal among chicken keepers,

but wanted to share this photo. I encountered this solitary eastern coyote while driving around on errands yesterday. I always keep my camera handy, and got very lucky to snap a few shots before it trotted off. Although we've picked up coyotes on our trail cam now and then (and hear them yapping around our property), we've only seen them on a few occasions. They are pretty elusive and shy. Sure, some individuals can become nuisance animals and get into trouble; but for the most part, these apex predators play a valuable role in our region's ecosystem and keep populations of rodents, rabbits, squirrels, etc. in balance. Regardless of how you feel about coyotes, it's easy to appreciate the beauty of this particular animal. Big and healthy...and that coat must do the trick during these frigid spells!

Very nice photo! A lot of predators are beautiful...as long as they aren't bothering anyone animals!.. I love looking at foxes as long as they are far away from my chickens...Kind of like mice and snakes...they are fine as long as they are not in my house...come in my house and they are dead meat!
