NY chicken lover!!!!

I don't like to use poison. My cat likes to bring me all sorts of critters and I don't want to risk the old man to get hurt.

We don't have to many big critters like bears and such around here so I'm not to worried about those. Haven't decided anything yet. Just and idea.

I don't advocate for the use of poisons. The risk of poisoning pets being my #1 concern, but also that of wild creatures eating the carrion of a poisoned animal and being poisoned themselves. I just can't feel good about that, but then I'm a nature nut. Death by poisoning is an incredibly painful way to go and all surrounding wildlife shouldn't run the risk of that fate. OK, now that's 2 more cents from TOB, totalling a hefty 4 cents, LOL.

I'll start by saying we don't have a bear problem here. I built my best coop in stages. Started with a 6' x 16' structure that had a 6x6 coop with attached 6x10 covered run.

The next year I converted the run side to a matching 6x6 coop and had a 4-foot space between coops. I built a shelf to hold the feed cans and have space underneath for hay/straw/shavings. I store a pitchfork, shovel, and broom behind the door and have small tools like scissors and scrapers hung above the window. The window is heavy wire with clear plastic roofing that comes off for warmer weather. Works great.

Really nice set up!! I like it!!

I've considered them too, but I've got enough breeds and would need to get rid of one, but which? The Columbians are big birds but late to mature and not prolific layers IMO. If you don't mind waiting and are eating them then they're worth the trouble. Much like the Jersey's I guess.

Of course if you don't count on eggs everyday it's okay too.

Rancher, You sound like you might consider giving up your CR's. I am torn on this; I don't know that I would get more of this breed. On one hand, there is Molly, who is a dependable layer and also very vocal, friendly and endearing. I'm very fond of her. Then there is the larger of the two "sisters", Ursa, who is standoffish, skittish and not a good layer. Do you see different personalities within the same breed like this? Raised the same way, just very different. I guess it's the same with human kids some times, too!

Need some advice...What incubator should I get? I don't want to get to big of a one...no cabinet ones. Don't want to be given the option to hatch so many. I'd like to stay under $200 before shipping. Has to have an automatic egg turner! I like the little Brinsea, but I do like the idea of being able to hatch out a few more. Maybe 10-12?. Was looking a the some of the others that holds up to 30-40 like the Hova-bators. I know that I don't have to hatch out that many. I just like the option of being able to set a dozen.

For those of you that have tried different types which ones do you like the best and have the best results? Help me!

Hi Luv,
I have a Brinsea. It holds 24 chicken eggs and pretty much hatches everything I put in it ( if it's fertile ! ) The one thing I don't like is that there isn't enough head room for the chicks. It's very easy to clean because it's made of hard plastic.

I also have a Hovabator 1588 w/ turner, it holds 42 chicken eggs and you can get turning racks for other size eggs. It's relatively easy to use and keep temp & humidity steady. I probably have 85-90% hatch in it. Styrofoam is a bit harder to clean.

I no longer hatch in my Brinsea, I move the eggs to the 1588 on day 18. If I was going to buy another bator I'd go with another Brinsea. One that holds 40 eggs !

Hope this helps !

I have the Brinsea that hold 40 eggs it has no more head room that the smaller ones I have, and I also have Hoveabator 1588 with digital control and the Hovabator 1602 all of my incubators have auto egg turners I do have to say my most favorite is the BrinseaCabinet incubator I have. Out of the tabletop ones my brinseas are again my favorites I usually get pretty close to 100% hatch rate and I just let them go I do nothing to them

Luv - TSC of course has the Little Giant Still Air incubators and the separate egg turner. I also seen they had Hovabators on the shelf, never seen them in store before.
I have a Little Giant with fan, got it for free from fellow BYC. Got the turner for Xmas. This is only my second hatch, so can't say how good it is. But for free, I can't complain :)

Any chance you would delivery feed to syracuse area ? Im sure people would be interested ...
I cant handle 100 pound packs 50 would be okay ..
I will need feed in about a month

The only way I could would be if it was a big delivery like 30-40 bags and the 50lb bags are either blue seal or Poulin grains so they are more money. The only other suggestion I can think of is anyone from Syracuse area come and buy a bunch at once if you stock up and have to make less trips it will be worth it for you. Otherwise their is always Chickenstock to stock up.

We have a Brinsea holds 7 eggs. Lindsey has one too. We have had great
success....usually hatch 6 out of 7 eggs. And I think that may have been
us not having 7 fertile eggs. It is small $150, takes up just a small space.
WE LOVE IT. Regards, Aria
