NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher- totally depends how much you would want. If you just want a bag or two I'd just charge per trip. If you want a lot I'd do per bag. Not looking to get rich, obviously want everyone to benefit from the cost savings Nutty is offering. Just trying to offset my own gas for the trip.

Well, feed trip aside.....

Hi everyone. We live in the Onondaga Hill part of Syracuse. We are knew to chickens as of this past summer when we bought our first place with property. We started with 4 BCM, added 5 Plymouth Barred Rock, then 2 Golden Comets, then 2 Partridge Rocks, then some Easter Eggers, Silver Laced Cochin Bantams, Silkies, and now we have some Oliver Eggers in the incubator :)

I think I'm addicted

hi Paula! I am on a lot of the same FB pages as you. (Melanie D) and i think we took some chicks you hatched a few years ago before you had a place to keep them.

WELCOME!

If the feed is organic I am willing to get some too.

So I have a question. I'm rebuilding my free range/ laying hen flock. I like an assortment of colors in it and was wondering what anybody's recommendations would be. I'm planning on getting 6-8 hens so if you could get any 6-8 chickens of any breed what you choose. I like to have LF Cochins so I will probably have one of them for a rooster. I was thinking about have some Ameraucanas but what else should I get to have with them. I loved the Comets when I had them but the single color was kind of boring to me. So anybody who has an opinion on something that makes a good layer and looks good free ranging, I'd love to hear it.

A mixed flock of pure breeds is fun. But if you wanted only 1 breed, I'd choose the Welsummer. Excellent ranger and good layer of pretty eggs, at least mine is. Her cossed offspring are also laying real well so far.

I'm pretty sure they said its organic. Can anyone confirm? I know it's non gmo.

Mel- I remember the chicks!! So funny that was well before we ever thought we would have land or animala. We just wanted the experience of hatching with the kids. We didn't know about different breeds back then. Do you know what they ended up being?

Evening all. Busy day at work today. Everyone is in snowmageddon mode. We are expecting a big storm tomorrow into wed. Came home and put plastic all around the silkie runs and doors as we are supposed to have blizzard conditions. They are not happy about that. Dh left for Ga to see his brother so its just me and the cat and the cheeps. I do have gas for the generator and the snowblower, plenty of food for the critters and me so we are in hunker down mode.

I have the newer version of the genesis hovabator that rancher has. It works very well. I put an autoturner in it and had many successful hatches last spring. Put it in my daughters room that has a stable temp and no drafts. I also have a brinsea octoagon 20 that i use for my silkie eggs. Works great for them.

County--choose the breeds you like the best. I love my heritage breed rhode island reds. They are superb foragers, tolerate the extreme weather conditions very well and are easily handled. I also have barred rocks and these girls are also superb layers, foragers and temperature tolerant. Both also dress out nicely when used for meat.

Be safe in this storm everyone. Havent seen this much snow coming in a long time.

I asked directly and it's definitely non gmo. Just didn't think to ask if it's organic. If you scroll back about 9 or 10 pages nutty said it's organically grown. Not sure if that means certified organic, or not, or that was a different feed .

IT is

It is non GMO and it is organic but it is not labeled as organic and will not be for that price if I want it labeled as organic the price goes way up so I am fine with it not being that way. If you want Certified Organic I can get that for you in Poulin Grain or Blue Seal but the price is definitely going to be more than what I get from Local.

Storm?

Keep in mind folks that 1. The turner adds heat, so when and if you take it out the temp will fall slightly but should not be a problem. 2. Someone posted that the spot nearest the turner motor gets hotter than elsewhere. I've used that spot with not trouble that I know of but I've never really checked to mark the egg in that spot.
