NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm getting either a started trio or an older trio already laying. I was going to go with the younger trio, but if you 2 want eggs from close by, I'll get the older trio. Let me know. I have to decide by the weekend. Older trio is from the Rees line.

Thanks for the offer! If you have Rees Line birds I'd definitely be interested in eggs or a trio of chicks/juveniles, but couldn't get them from you till chickenstock because you're actually further away from me than the breeder in NH is :) Would totally be interested though.

Colo's leg is hurt I have in the chicken hospital (x-large dog crate) and put a very low totem pole hen with him for company because he was so upset to be taken from the flock - he is head rooster ....

I don't see any blood or injury - but it is just flopping about - I'm not sure what to do or what to look for.

He is eating and drinking ...and eyes are alert ... blah .... **** winter keeping everyone in the coop so long ... now a stretch of 4 nights at -20 ?! No - the planet is not broken or anything.

(Hi everyone!!)

I am not looking forward to this upcoming supercold stretch. I don't heat my coops (couldn't even if I wanted to - my one coop is HUGE) so I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

You don't see any blood? maybe he fell off something or flew into a wall?

Thanks for the welcome :) I've been on BYC a long time (I noticed today my join date was 2008!) and had a variety of different chicken breeds. Just when I was getting serious about the thought of really breeding I had a bad car accident and it knocked me down more than a few pegs and the flock became just for having. I took a few years off from the forum and just let the last 4 of my old girls (2 were 8 years old already and still laying off and on) go live with a larger flock up the road in November I think. We decided that we would be too hectic all winter with a need to move and the 4 old chickens were probably not going to do well in the big coop by themselves. There is a farm up the road that has untold numbers of chickens collected from all over the place and they have chicken palaces, the coops are heated, there is heated water inside and out in the pen and they get free fed high quality feed as well as daily scratch and kitchen scrap. I'm extra glad I sent them since the cold has been just brutal this year! We will be restarting from no stock but not as newbies completely.

As for the chickenstock in May, where and when?! And, man, that could be dangerous :p

I also quite like the laced and double laced Barnevelders also Bielefelders. I looked up Buckeyes but they are a bit too plain as I like to watch my chickens and there are so many great breeds it seems silly to go with something I can't really get into. My husband really loves the pattern on the Speckled Sussex (Mille Fleur, etc...) and I like the look as well which is why I was kind of hoping to find a good breeder of them. I'm caught between wanting great chickens but not having a huge fortune to spend on the best ones, lol.

If you can't feel a break he may have dislocated it. Not sure what the best way to relocate it into the joint is without x-ray or some other ability to scan but I'm sure someone could advise on that.

Yah - Buckeyes are not really flashy birds ! SS are the same base color with that splash of white and I agree - they make a good dual purpose bird.

I'll see if I can feel a break tomorrow - I wanted to give him just a day of rest in case it was just a pull .... but he is still not using it tonight. I just don't want him to be in pain at all ..... He and the hen are snuggled up commiserating being in a big old comfy cage.

Okay...You guys making your own detergent...how do you do it? Shave down bars and melt them? do you have a HE washer that it works with?
I make my own too. I use a recipe that I found on line. I'm sure that the others are similar. I buy a bar of laundry soap, grate it up and melt it in hot water. Then after melted mix it in with borax and washing soda in a 5 gal bucket. Fill the rest with water and presto Home made laundry soap. I have a jug that I put it in to use, the rest I leave in the gal bucket next to the washer. I have a HE washer and it works fine. Hubby doesn't care for the plain smell so I add in a little of the sent boosters with his clothes and he is happy. There are also recipes that are for powder. haven't tried them just the liquid. I like it and can't begin to tell you how much money that I have saved. I try to use more natural cleaning supplies. I can't handle all the chemical smell with my asthma.

That sounds pretty good. I am going to need to look into it. I have a lot of issues with chemicals, sensativities so I wind up doing a lot with vinegar. But, Tide free is wicked expensive. Would love to cut that out of my budget!

You can dose him with Aspirin for the pain - five five grain tablets to a gallon of water offered free choice. Poor baby :( Wish I could take a look at it for you.

Buckeyes are great birds for our cold weather though same with chanteclers almost no comb or wattle. That's why I didn't go with RIRs last yr, wanted something different. Went for a colourful egg basket. Welsummers, brownleghorns, and eastereggers. Those EEgs sure do look cold hardy and warm, bundled up with scarves around their necks Lol and really fluffy. I've had one laying a olive egg almost everyday this winter, have at least one still not laying yet, hoping for blue eggs.
