NY chicken lover!!!!

Yah - Buckeyes are not really flashy birds !    SS are the same base color with that splash of white and I agree - they make a good dual purpose bird.

I'll see if I can feel a break tomorrow - I wanted to give him just a day of rest in case it was just a pull .... but he is still not using it tonight.   I just don't want him to be in pain at all .....   He and the hen are snuggled up commiserating being in a big old comfy cage.

Sorry to hear about Colo. hopefully it's just a strain or sprain. This cold drives me crazy & that the birds have to stay in. I'm sure they get bored & do stupid things.

How are the delewares as far as dressing out? The beilefelders are really pretty & look like large birds. Sounds like they can be tough to find tho.

Where are you located and how much do your birds usually cost after being processed? I am very impressed with your self sufficiency. I am trying to do the same from scratch, but with little money I do not have the equipment to clear my land and have been doing it by hand. I would have it done, but well meaning friends have offered to bring over equipment and scrape or till, but never show up... My small garden that I did last year was done by hand and it yielded so many cucumbers and tomatoes and sweet carrots, (the mice got those tho...) but only one butternut squash, the others shriveled at about one inch. Grandpa and grandma have passed away so my farming source of info is gone. I want to become more self sufficient, sick of over priced over processed foods.

DeansMill Welcome to BYC. Are you asking how much if I grow the bird up and process it then sell it. I have never done that but may consider it and would get you a price. Thank you on the self sufficiency I try if I wasn't working 2 jobs and going to school myself I would do more
You are a woman after my own heart! I need to learn to do all these things but they take so much time. But, I think building a root cellar would be a good start for us newbie farmers.

That's some serious ambition!
Root cellar is one of the projects for this summer. The stuff I do does take some time but not as much as you would think,

So... technically not a NYer, yet. Hubby and I close on a house near Oswego on the 25th of this month (yes an odd day but we do have our reasons). We want to add back chickens and probably some other stuff too but one step at a time. Posting here so I can start networking a bit. Looking for dual purpose chickens eventually. Don't have to dress out huge, but I don't want just layers that we eat, lol. Leaning towards speckled sussex as they are also appealing to the eye and blend well in the warmer months to help at least a bit with predator issues. Would want to find someone who breeds them as utility birds though and not the "meh" quality hatchery birds. Open to suggestions for other breeds that are able to be found locally that fit the bill. Not really interested in any sort of water fowl but turkeys and pheasants perhaps. May also look into some meat pigs. Perhaps a few meat sheep too, love the Dorpers a friend has. Not planning to add it all at once but I also know I suck at waiting, lol. Also, any sources of good heritage seeds or plants up in the Syracuse/Oswego area? Looking forward to meeting some like minded folks!
Firedove welcome and yeah I am with you I hate waiting.

@firedove welcome! This is a great thread. Hope u will come to chickenstock in May.

Yes Firedove and Deansmill please both come to Chickenstock would love to have you there.

. I do a lot of that but have hopes to do more.

We make our own laundry detergent too, saves $$$.

Demp4 Yes it does save lots of money just love my homemade laundry detergent

Okay...You guys making your own detergent...how do you do it? Shave down bars and melt them? do you have a HE washer that it works with?

Purpletie3 here is the link for the one I make I do have a front loading HE washer and have no problems, I do shave down the Fels Naptha bar with my food processor shredding blade. http://www.duggarfamily.com/content...dry_soap_front_or_top_load_machine_best_value

Thanks for the welcome :) I've been on BYC a long time (I noticed today my join date was 2008!) and had a variety of different chicken breeds. Just when I was getting serious about the thought of really breeding I had a bad car accident and it knocked me down more than a few pegs and the flock became just for having. I took a few years off from the forum and just let the last 4 of my old girls (2 were 8 years old already and still laying off and on) go live with a larger flock up the road in November I think. We decided that we would be too hectic all winter with a need to move and the 4 old chickens were probably not going to do well in the big coop by themselves. There is a farm up the road that has untold numbers of chickens collected from all over the place and they have chicken palaces, the coops are heated, there is heated water inside and out in the pen and they get free fed high quality feed as well as daily scratch and kitchen scrap. I'm extra glad I sent them since the cold has been just brutal this year! We will be restarting from no stock but not as newbies completely.

As for the chickenstock in May, where and when?! And, man, that could be dangerous :p

I also quite like the laced and double laced Barnevelders also Bielefelders. I looked up Buckeyes but they are a bit too plain as I like to watch my chickens and there are so many great breeds it seems silly to go with something I can't really get into. My husband really loves the pattern on the Speckled Sussex (Mille Fleur, etc...) and I like the look as well which is why I was kind of hoping to find a good breeder of them. I'm caught between wanting great chickens but not having a huge fortune to spend on the best ones, lol.

I know someone has already given you the link to chickenstock thread I am the host of it and would love if you joined us.

Things I need or want

Does anyone on here make Signs I need a sign for Eggs and then I need a business sign has to be 2 sided plus another sign two sided for the Feed.

Also does anyone on here make there own bath bar soap I am wanting to try that next but need someone to point me in the right direction for the best place to get supplies.

Last Thing for now is fruit trees I want to get some fruit trees planted this summer figure if anyone on here has any they are looking to sell it would help them out compared to me going to a nursery and getting them.

I love my Barnvelders'! I have a mixed flock, but last year got 2 Barnies - they are very friendly & personable, good layers too! Their feathers look gorgeous in the sun - it really reflects the beetle green sheen.....maybe more this year
