NY chicken lover!!!!

EEK! I'm at work and power is out at home! Normally it wouldn't matter, except that I have 15 chicks in the garage under a heat lamp! Have another 2 in the house under heat, but they should be ok a little longer. They are from the Valentines hatch, so almost 6 weeks old and fully feathered, but it is still stinking cold out there!

i hope your power is restored soon, one of the downsides of a heat lamp is they only heat as the light contacts the area illuminated or the chicks themselves...hopefully there is enough heat in the surrounding materials so it slowly releases and keeps them from getting chilled. its one of the downsides to living in rural areas that the power can't be relied upon 100%...best of luck

We need to have a new one on ours too. The spring broke and it is so heavy to open now and the bottom is starting to rot too...Good luck
Ours is rotted and I'd hoped it would last the winter, but it needs more repair than I can do. It's a heavy wooden door. Single 7x8 so not too expensive. I've replaced the cables last year. Fixing the springs shouldn't be too difficult.

Is what I'd like but in Hunter green. I'll most likely have to paint it.

oh no! Hope it comes back on quick!

I think they'll be fine. I have chicks all different ages in my garage, some are only 4wks old and I've been turning my heat lamp OFF at night because not only did my CLP bill sky rocket last month, but I also have a rooster in the garage that started crowing at 3am when I left the heat lamp ON all night. Everyone's been fine and I've been doing it for about two weeks now. With temps as low as 17 degrees in the morning.

So I've got 6 Sebbie goose eggs developing in the hovabator my friend gave me to incubate these eggs. She's got one out of three that pipped today and is on it's way to hatching. I'm so excited for her. This is her first attempt at hatching goose eggs and so far she's been successful. I love baby geese! Not sure if I want any yet tho. She offered me two for doing this hatch for her but I have a feeling I'll be sending them all home with her. Not sure I'm ready to tackle geese yet. I want to worry about adding ducks first when we move and then goats.

Does anyone add Calf-Manna to their chicken feed? I have 4 silkie hens who are just downright terrible layers. I barely got any eggs from them when we moved here, I'm assuming because of the stress of the move and being in new environments, etc. but these two I've had since 2013 have barely given me any eggs at all. One silkie hen was laying for me end of November into January and is now broody, so of course she stopped already. But not a single egg from the other three that I want to lay. These are all under 3 too, maybe going on 3 if anything. I saw someone mention this Calf-Manna to help boost protein and egg laying so I figured it can't hurt to try. But if they don't give me anything this summer I may end up parting with them because they are not helping me get where I want to be with my Silkie project.

They all survived! I watched the NYSEG outage map, was out at least 2 hours.
Rancher - you need electricity to make warm water, for both the well pump and water heater. Otherwise, good idea.
Lynzi- we've still been getting single digits here, one morning was zero. So heat lamp has been on constantly. I'm ready for warmer temps.
Garage chicks are in a very large brooder we built in the corner of the garage. 6'x8'x3' high. Covered with plywood and wire, which is currently covered by towels and cardboard to hold the heat in. Heat lamp is hanging inside, secured by 2 different points. Chicks stay pretty close to the light still, since it is so cold. There is 15 out there.
In the house I still have 2. The small one is looking sickly tonight after its cool down today. They all hatched at the same time, but this one BO fell behind. The BO/EE is kind to it so remained in the house for companionship. It hasn't been thriving, but now worried about it. Ideas?

It sounds like it may have internal problems ...
you could try chick saver ( electrolyte powder) into the water , Or apple cider vinegar , or liguid vitamins no iron .
I dont think a antibiotic would help
