For those who don't know just a heads up. 

I won't be making the chickensstock but will be sending up hatching eggs. Mixed lot, Dels, C.Rocks, Marans and EE's. So if you go make sure your incu is empty.  

I'll be sending some other stuff for the auction too, but wanted folks to be prepared to bid on eggs. Of course there will be other folks who will have eggs too, so be prepared to bid on theirs too.

Phorda, I met you last year, and I had a Rancher siting after the event, I think shrubs were involved...always look for him in TSC, but haven't seen him .

There is a new store, near Great Northern Mall, called Runnings. It is open and has Chick Days. Tried to go last weekend, but it wasn't open yet. Has anyone been?

Glasshen, yes I remember. It was great to meet you in person. You mentioned one of the hazards of hatching out eggs: that there's a good chance that at least half of what hatches will be Roos. So true. I placed at least 16 roos last year and kept 6 of them. This spring has been a little challenging w so many Roos. One in particular has been begging for a spot in the freezer lately. I think about that conversation every time I set eggs.

Speaking of, I've been trying to come up with a plan for extra Roos this year. Does anyone on this thread have experience with caponizing? My vet says he has done it years ago. I might be able to bribe him w hatching eggs to teach me how to do it. I'm sure the capons would be more mellow, but do they fill out more than roos to make it worth while?

Capons are supposed to be a lot tastier and more tender - you don't see them very often anymore though - you used to be able to find them at butcher shops and higher end grocery stores (admittedly, this was many decades ago...) Now they are a specialty item and are easiest found at places that cater to foodies. Apparently, they are definitely worth the trouble!

I want to experiment with capons, main reason why I ordered white jersey giants from sandhill. It will be over a year before I will be trying it, have to grow them out and select breeder roos first, and giants take over a year to figure out the biggest ones.
There is threads on BYC with very detailed pics on the process, and good YouTube vids also, doesn't look that hard.
I've heard there is different things you can do when incubating eggs to better the pullets ratio, I'm going to try the opposite for more roos Lol!
Frozen capons online are $50-$80. I remember seeing them in stores also, but not anymore.

I've seen the utube videos on caponizing. It doesn't look too difficult, but I'd still like to have someone experienced in the procedure with me the first time. I would like to try it w breese at some point, but my bators seem to be full w other projects this year. I know i will have extra layer cockerels who will likely end up on someone's dinner table anyway. Caponizing seems like a reasonable option. My understanding was that they have to be 7-10 weeks old when it's done so that they don't grow into big bad roosters. Can you wait a whole year on the Giants?
