NY chicken lover!!!!

There has been coverage on the news of lots of states west of us having bird flu. Wonder what we can do to avoid that in our state and flocks. Maybe make sure the hatcheries our birds come from are not in the affected states...and minimal exposure to wild birds.

Here I don't feed the wild birds, but they are here, no real way to keep them away. Also, I like them, and they eat insects...balance is everything in life, why is it so difficult to attain?

I have wild geese and a couple ducks in my front yard and pond and neighbors pond. No more free ranging for my chickens, confined to coop and run. They are a couple hundred yards from my coop but you can't stop little birds from flying around
:-(

I had amazing luck with my Sandhills chicks last year. They are a small operation and seem to take really good care of their flocks

What did you get? I have ten white jersey giants, ten black langshans and five blue langshans coming. I would liked to have ordered all of their different breeds lol!

Okay...got another weird one...last night we had bad storms. I ran out to close the coop windows and every chick was huddled together in a corner. One Bielfelder roo was not looking good kinda sideways...so, I pulled him from the pile. His legs were sticking straight out...so, finally I got him to sit right and today he passed...can a chick get scared to death??? He was the biggest guy in the shed.

At this rate I won't have to worry about to many roo's.

I got blue, black, and white orpingtons. And black Sumatras. There are pics of the orpingtons on the standard bred Orpington forum

Hi All,
Been busy getting ready for our move next week! Wednesday we're getting the truck and Thursday we're moving in. I have my last batch of eggs in the incubator due this week. LuvMyChicks sent me Magpie duck eggs, can't wait to see what hatches. I already see their little beaks pipping inside the shell. I also have 2 sebbie geese that I hatched out, both are splash in color and growing like weeds! I hatched out 3 this year for my friend and she gave me 2. Also, in June we're getting two Nigerian Dwarf goats! Can't wait. I went to see them Friday and they are just the cutest things. My kids are stoked!

Next week when we move I plan to set up my breeding pens for my Sizzles and Silkies. If anyone is looking for eggs, I can ship some. I have someone hatching from me right now in TX sent her 6 and all 6 made it to lockdown. They should be hatching in the next two days or so. All breeds right now (Sizzles, Silkies and Orps) are Blues and Splash. I'm hoping my Blue smooth rooster over my Blue frizzled Sizzle will give me some blacks but I haven't hatched any from them yet with this move that was planned.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'll post pics soon!
