NY chicken lover!!!!

Just Euthanized Colo     :hit

he was finally showing signs of real distress and both legs were loosing strength.   :hit

Used ether to slowly put him to sleep - then used CO2 gas after he eased into sleep.   Very hard to do.  My sweet boy.  :hit

So sorry :hugs All four of his grandchicks are still developing in my incubator, so at least you might still get a grandson from him.

Yesterday when I was locking up for the night and realized that I was missing a duck. I counted at least 5 times. The first time I thought okay everyone was there then got thinking that it didn't seem right...Then I realized that I should have counted to 11 and there were only 10. Counted a few more times to see if maybe I counted wrong...When I realized that I was indeed missing a duck I had to figure out which one one was gone...After much thought and not to much cooperation on the rest of the flock, I realized that I was missing one of my girls "Dottie"... She was a year old. I searched as much as I could last night with the flashlights but didn't see anything. Went out this morning and searched everywhere on our 5 acres. I found several dens for animals (a few that I had not found before) up in the woods, but there was no sign of her. I finally had to give up the search cause it is snowing here and it is getting impossible to see any white feathers when the ground is getting covered with white snow...The worst part is that I'm not sure when she disappeared. I can't remember if I have been counting wrong for how long. I checked my egg count and on Sunday I started getting 5 eggs instead of 6 so she could have been gone on Saturday..and it I didn't notice till Wednesday. I didn't think much about being down an egg. I figured that someone would have to take a break from laying once in a while. On Saturday I let them out and couldn't get them back in before we had to head to the city for the evening. So something could have taken her when we were gone. I don't usually let them be out when we are away from the house for more then a quick run down to town. I just and so upset that I would be so bad not to notice that one was missing,,,

On a happier note my duck eggs have all hatched. I only got one that was blue and white and only one back and white that has close to the correct markings for magpies so I'll be keeping that one and I think that I will keep the blue until I know what it is then decide. Hopefully the black and white one will be a girl to replace Dottie.

I made it out of our old baby crib. I think that I may make another one! My sister said that she would give me her old crib that they don't need any more.

I found this picture on line. I wanted to build mine just like this...But there were no plans or instructions, just the picture...

So this is what I started with...

And after day one and 3 broken bits...I ended with this

After a lot of tinkering and figuring I finally finished it yesterday.

(There is an orby type thing in this picture that I can't explain)

I put the big kids in there, but brought them back inside last night because it was going to be so cold last night. I'm going to get a heat lamp put out there for them with it being so chilly/cold this week. I'm sure that they would be fine. They are pretty much fully feathered but they are still little.

I had to do something cause my backroom is over flowing with my 3 brooders and I really need to separate the chicken and the ducks... The poor baby chicks are getting so dirty.

I just got 7 New Hampshire Red chicks from Agway. No clue how many days old they are when they get delivered, but guessing they are in their first few days. First time raising new chicks, hoping they all do well. Temp seems right and they seem happy. Stressing out over them though.
