I'm new to chicks but I do live in Broome co. What's the problem with them drinking out of mud puddles? And what is AI? I have 8 R.I.R. easter babies and 10 may 3rd babies 5 black astrolorp and 5 white leghorn . They all live happily in a 6×6 coop and a 16× 24 covered run. They have recently started to get free range privileged in the afternoon and early evening. Should I wait until next year to get them a roo?

AI is short for Avian Influenza...other wise known as bird flu....I thin.k that I read that some think that AI could be passed from wild birds to a flock if they are both drinking from the same puddle...I haven't heard about it around here yet so don't panic yet.

So far so good with Attila having ten chicks! I did discover a bit of an issue with our grow-out pen and coop. The fencing my husband used for the door that separates the two coops, the same fencing is used around the pen itself...well the openings are large enough that some of the smaller chicks can squeeze through.

Gonna have to fix that.

Broody 3 is faithfully sitting. Decisions, decisions! I really don't need more chicks after Attila's 10 grow out. My coop is more or less at its max...and as it is, I need to find homes for the Silkie/Sebright cockerels, as well as the extra pure silkie cocks I have. Any takers?

Anyways, I need to either move Broody 3, or try and break her broodiness. George is still an issue and I can't really leave Broody 3 with eggs over there, as George is still pushing her off the nest, which forces her to take up brooding in the wrong box.

I have a pylmouth white rock...that started the broody cluck...after some of my hens went broody...
shes not broody ...she just runs around & clucks like she is ...SO FUNNY !

Welcome! I'm in southern Cortland County. Technically this is HPAI - highly pathogenic avian influenza, which makes it extra scary. Being raised on a dairy farm I always know AI for artificial insemination. I'll try to remember to post the map link again tomorrow from work.
Are all of you chicks pullets? And are you in a location that allows roosters? With that many chicks, I'm assuming you are not in town so should be ok. I have valentines hatch Roos available, but they would be larger than your pullets right now. Except Doodle, he's a special case. Are you looking for a certain breed? My roos are partridge rock, buff Orp and mixed breeds.

My Hermione did that all last year, run around with her neck feathers ruffled up and clucking like a broody. Now this year she really is broody for the first time at 3 years old. She is getting used to us moving her off the nest each night to check for extra eggs, no more pecking. She goes out, eats, drinks, dust bathes, torments a couple hens, sits on the bachelor cage to preen, then right back in on her eggs.

we are in harpursville on top over a hill with not much but horses for neighbors so we can have just about any critters we want. As best we can tell all 18 are pullets but from all my reading here we might be wrong, won't know for sure until they lay or crow. Lol. No specific breed of roo in mind just one that's a good dual purpose . We are raising for both meat and eggs. I have 5 kids 2 dogs and a hubby to feed so raising birds in addition to a large already established garden sounded like a good money saver.

ok I was thinking artificial insemination being from the Midwest and all. Makes better sense now why to discourage drinking from puddles. My girls should be ok. They run my yard and most other birds get charged for landing in the yard. They love muddy water to drink though.

That one puddle was man made just about 10 minutes before hand...well should I say little boy made...My son disappeared for a little while then I found him out playing with the hose. He was pretty proud of the puddle that he made.

I believe I was quite guilty of such muddy creations as a kid, too. Water & mud were like irresistible magnets back then. Ur story made me smile & remember. Thanks!
