NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello!
Does anyone else have mulberry trees? How do your chickens like them? My chickens LOVE them and they have just started to fall from the tree!

I have two types - but they are struggling with the winter here - each year they grow well - but not enough to put on berries - and then nearly die and send up shoots the next spring - to grow well - but not enough to berry and then ..... blah .... where are you and how do you prep them for winter? I wrapped the trunks with fabric and left some weeds around the trunk for winter .... but that is not seeming to be enough - and they are sheltered from direct prevailing wind - they only get it from the south .....

would love to have them finally take off ...

I knew about the mess - and have mine WAY far from the house or any car parking ! :)

My mulberry tree is huge, and laden with unripe fruit this year. It looks like it's going to be a bumper crop for the birds this year - the orchard looks like it's going to be a hot hangout in the fall as well!

No mulberry trees here, but they're on the "wanted" list for when/if I ever get my own place. When we were looking at places when we had to move last year, one place was a "dream property" including an orchard and mulberry trees - but the house was less than desirable, and part of the barn roof had caved in. Plus, you could only buy it via an online auction as-is. But, that was the first time I'd seen a mulberry tree in NY state, and it was huge and loaded with fruit.

@Beer can - we've gone as a family to Catskill Game Farm, and my dad's family used to go there quite frequently with their family. So yes, it is sad that they had to close.
But Dad has joked with me that I should buy it, since I'll need all the space for my animals. But, I'm pretty sure that won't be happening!

Broody season is in full swing here too - let's see ... here's this year's broody list so far ...
Lydia & Rainbow's chicks are now fully feathered & on their own, but I'm sure Lydia will have a 2nd batch, as she usually does.

Lydia - "super broody", though a little "spastic" at times - doesn't like to be confined very long once her chicks hatch.
But, does a great job raising them, even though her chicks are very independent and not really "friendly".

Rainbow - 1st time "mom", as she was raised by a broody last year; very protective of her young

Confetti - bantam Cochin who's living with the SFH, such a sweet girl - she's the reason I now have more bantam Cochins!

Olive - daughter of "Lydia" and just a broody; last year she raised 20+ Cornish Rock cross, then later went broody in the fall, but Daisy raised those chicks as she didn't "share" well.
Unfortunately, a few days after the chicks hatched this year, she was acting "strange" and was found to have a sour crop, started treating her, but died overnight.

So, her chicks are now "motherless".

Ellie - 3rd time broody (2 broods last year) and is also a great "mom".

Bluebonnet - hatched out one batch of SFH eggs, gave the chicks to Ellie & she's back sitting on more SFH eggs due next week.
1st time "broody" & hasn't raised out chicks yet, but I think she'd do well was she was raised by a broody herself.

Plus ... 2 broody Muscovy ducks (finally!) and one of Daisy's pullets she raised last fall through winter - also sitting on duck eggs.
I've also noticed one or two other hens starting to get the signs of thinking about being broody!

The two new bantams - more potential broodies - seem to be healthy and adjusting great, so the other day I moved
them to one of the grass paddocks, where they're still separate, but can start to acclimate themselves with the rest of the flock.

I have a friend who has one I think. Some kind of berry tree. Little things though. He offered me some one year. Pick your own but I was getting apples at that time.

Tab if you get a tree plant it far from your house. The birds love it and poop, poop, poop.

Now folks keep in mind if you have fruit trees or whatever and more than you can use, you can sell it. I tell folks I see who have stuff that I will pay to pick my own. I have lots of recipes for jams and stuff and they don't take much to make a batch. Even if you get a dollar it's better than letting it rot on the ground.

I'm hoping to get my own crop of Red currants this year.

Anyone know about Josta Berries? I've two nice bushes but don't see any berries on them yet. Got them from someone here as cuttings. Rooted them myself and they're doing good.

A friend sold her mothers house and gave me her concord grape vines. I dug them up and planted them. They seem to being doing good where I put them.

They look so nice. If I don't get some fertile marans eggs, I may have to figure out where to move Big Delores and just give her Del, CR's and EE eggs. She just sitting so patiently.

I was just thiinking. Those dog crates might be just the ticket. I could put her in one. Let her out in the morning to go and do her thing and then close her back up after she is done. This way other hens can't get in and lay another egg.
