NY chicken lover!!!!

Glad she is okay ...could she have been hiding out there yesterday ? or you think she got away from something ?

We scoured the grounds - and her spot under the cart was the first place I looked. I found a really well hidden pekin nest, but not her. She got attacked by narcissus as a young duckling, and is basically a shut in. She will only go out if you put her out physically, and is always happy to get back in. I put her out each afternoon for a few hours because she was getting harassed by the nesting Muscovy due to her fascination with nests and babies. She is very stubborn, and kept braving an angry broody to pretend that she was old enough to lay and set herself. She is heavily imprinted, and I'm sure a friendly, interesting looking bird waiting to be let inside the garage caught somebody's eye. Ducks don't come back after 2 days of heavy rain and no food bowl thirsty and with spotlessly clean bills. She is particularly good at digging for insect larvae in the ground - she should have looked the part of a foraging bird. She also rivals a call duck in how loud she can be. When she wants something, is stressed, or giving a greeting, she can make your ears bleed. The only noise like hers came from her sisters... She was out of the area. The geese tipped us off when she materialized again...

I've managed to catch up. End of school year activities, birthdays, company, and family functions. Still another week to go for school.

All 4 of my pekin hens went broody and have been sitting on eggs. 2 quit last week with no results. I just checked other 2 nests, one had babies peeking back at me from momma the other the hen was gone eggs cold. I can't find her. No signs that something got her, I'm going to check farther out. All 4 nests were near each other.

The weeds are starting to take over my garden too. I need some more time for doing things at home

It does sound like possibly someone stole her, then decided they had no idea what to actually do with a duck - and probably an upset duck at that! Poor girl, glad she's back home.

Anyone interested in two ayam cemani cross cockerels? One of them I was going to keep for myself, but I've decided to part with him because currently he's the dominant boy, and I want Tesoro, Honey's son, to be the dominant rooster, and he would be if Pretty Boy found a good home. They are cemani / NN EE crosses, but neither are NN. Soot, the whitish one, does have really cute muffs though.

Well, I put the last three chicks out with Attila today and she has taken them in like they were hers all along. They, on the other hand, took a few minutes to take to her. I guess its kind of disorienting to be 2-3 days old, having spent those first few days in a large brood box with small children faces peering in at you almost constantly...and then to be taken outside to a full chicken coop and handed over to a large broody hen and her 7 other babies.

So that makes 10 babies for Attila. I'm surprised at how fast they are starting to feather.

I also moved all the rest of the teenagers over to the big bird side of the coop and man they are not happy. Every night, I have to go in and take the whole lot out of the nesting box they've curled up in, and put them on the roost. It probably isn't helping that the hens are pecking at them. My dominant rooster, on the other hand, doesn't pay a lick of attention to them. He's such a good boy...too bad I'm going to end up processing him in a few weeks.

Broody 3 is still being broody...sitting on two dummy eggs (or whatever eggs she can find when George takes over her nest, as she's wont to to pretty much daily). I'm debating whether or not to move Broody 3 over to the grow-out side with Attila and her chicks, but am not sure how Broody 3 will react to the chicks, or how Attila will react to Broody 3. But I want to move her sooner rather than later to avoid the mishap we had with Broody 2. I still haven't even decided for sure if I want to even give her eggs to hatch.

She is a handful - loud, large, and in charge... My saxony hens are all that way. Her mother can bite harder and do more damage than an angry goose. One of her sisters is the mistress of the Body Slam From Out of Nowhere. Her other sister is queen of the Bite from Behind... Drakes are much more subdued, but her father can administer quite the beating when defending the honor of his underaged daughters.. They are pretty much a cross between a duck, a tank, and a toddler. They are not what people would expect from a duck... :lau
