NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello! I recently joined BYC ...but I have raised chickens for five years now. I did my first hatch this summer and now with nine chicks...I am realizing that six out of the nine are probably roosters. Does anyone have any interest in them or any suggestions where a nearby bachelor pad might be. I have someone who will take them to eat, but I just can't go there yet. They are currently four weeks old and they are all unusual breeds. I have a heritage Dominique, necked neck, barred Cochins, blue favacuana and a barred olive eggers. The eggs were purchased through my pet chicken. It was fun to do but now the hard part comes. I don't mind keeping them until they get older, but when the crowing starts, they gotta go. Someone told me of a place in NJ. A sanctuary of sorts. A friend of mine went there to get a new rooster and had the pick of the lot! Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am close to NYC. Thanks for sharing any ideas!

You probably have 8-10 weeks to figure it out. I know my SIL is looking for a new rooster, but I am already hatching a batch for her to choose from, and we are way upstate from you.

Actually, I am fairly sure about three of them. I went to the forum where people help to identify your breed or sex and they confirmed several. If you change your mind, I'd be happy to meet you halfway! I am hoping that they get a loving home and avoid the pot!

Just wanted to let you all know that my sister is home now and is doing well. She has to take it really easy till the hole from the chest tube heals. It is nice that she is back home. I know her 2 little ones are happy to have Mommy home...

Got a picture of my turkeys up for the night tonight. They have a face that only a mother can love. I think that I have 4 toms and 3 hens. They are sitting boy, girl, boy, girl, boy, girl, boy. The one that I call "Big Tom" is on the right. He got the name because he was the biggest, but may end up changing his name soon. As long as he stays the nicest then he will stay, but if one of the other boys end up nicer then I will keep them and Big Tom will be for Thanksgiving!

Luv, it's great to read ur sis is healing at home. That's great news! That's a great pic of ur turkeys. There's nothing quite like the personality of a turkey. They're such sweet & goofy birds. :). What breed of turkeys is it that u have? They're real nice looking birds.

Welcome to BYC! This is a great thread uv found. Good luck w ur Roos. Wish it was easier to keep multiple Roos, but they just make it difficult. I've got quite a few myself that will likely end up in freezer camp. :( sometimes u can find homes for them on Craigslist or on a message board at ur local feed store. It's tough when hatch ratio is 50:50 yet peaceful coexistence is no more than 1:4. Suppose it's the curse of being born a chicken. At least they taste like chicken :D

Since it appears that there isn't an active thread for Sept ChickenStock. I was wondering what breeds would be coming. Day olds and very young birds? I would like to get 3-6 more birds, depending on breed. Heavy, dual purpose, heritage breeds that do well in semi confinement???
Additionally is anyone bringing plants that are meant to be transplanted in the fall? I am working on my garden and yard still.

I should have some transplants lambs ears, bee balm & possibly some herbs & brunnera. Nutty hasn't posted anything for ages, I'm hoping she is still having a gathering.

Well I stopped by Maines today after dropping DW off at the airport. Burgers come in 15# boxes. The number of burgers depends on size. 1/4 is four burgers per pound (60 count) or 1/5, five burgers per pound (75 count) .

Price is $58.99 a box. $3.93 a pound? That seems like a lot to me am I right? Course I'm not sure someone can make burgers on the spot and weigh each one to make sure they're all the same size.

They do have a 10 pound box of 1/4 for $37.99 or thereabouts.

They are Red Slates and one White Holland they tossed in just in case. I'm getting ready to start letting them free range soon. Maybe this weekend or next week. Just want to make sure that they know where home is before I let them out. I would hate to have them not come back.
