NY chicken lover!!!!

So I don't know if its a good thing or a bad thing...
I HAD to drive up to Ava tonight because my chickens wouldn't eat the Chicken food that wasn't organic. I bought 2 bags back at Chickenstock in May, so it's the only food they know... Now it doesn't appear they want to eat anything else..

I had the reverse problem - tried to change them to organic! Picky little buggers would not touch it..I gave in after a 2 week fight, I guess they have me trained

Now I know why all you crazy chicken people have so many chickens!!!

It starts with: Ohhh, I think I'd like to get some chickens. They can eat the leftovers, turn the compost , eat all the yucky bugs, larvae and weed seeds from the garden and I get eggs out of the bargain... Yes, this sounds all reasonable and all that. Makes perfect sense Yup!!!

THEN you see a different "kind" of chicken and it's "GAME ON." OOOOOoooo, I like this one with the speckles and there's the ones with muffs and beards. ones that shimmer beetle green in the sunlight, and that one with the feathers, that don't feel like feathers at all and the ones that have giant pom-poms on their heads,or funny little top hats. oh, let's not forget the ones that are pure white with with black heads, and then the come in Blue, Silver, Russet, Lavender Oh my, yes and then there's the ones that quack, and the ones with.... wait a minute chickens don't quack, Ah, that's okay lets get some of those too. How hard could it to be to build another little house but this one gets a pool.

I've officially become a crazy chicken lady. However, I am not the only one on my block there is another one that lives around the corner... I hear egg songs every day at around 11am and mine aren't even laying yet.

Now I have to choose between chickens... Not an easy plight. I don't want to choose. I want to have all kinds of pretty chickens. Little Batams, tiny Seramas, Beautiful Dominiques, Awesome Australorps, Fantastical Favorelles, Magical Marans...

I wonder how many divorces are made because your honor, "She loves her chickens more than me."

OH yes, Bakers, you have it! Pharm, so sad about that bear. If they want to be here, where people say they aren't, they need to not cause problems especially not taking chickens.

The latest broody hen has been sitting on her eggs for four weeks. Eight, down to seven, but she has been fierce and constant. I got her off the eggs and tested them in water, no movement. So I made an emergency call to Deb and she had two little chicks that a broody had hatched. I whisked them home and stuffed them under the hen from behind while she was trying to rid the world of my other hand in front. Fingers crossed...and also that they won't be Roos. Possibility of colored eggs here down the road a bit. I took out five of those dud eggs, have to get the other two somehow. Tomorrow is another day.

My four 8-week old chicks sleep in the tree. We have a cedar near the coop with a ladder of branches. They've decided that about 10 feet up is where they nest. This is night 3. My guess is that this will be safe for now, but I will try to get them accustomed to the big coop tomorrow.

Morning all. Got a call from my house sitter on thursday. Bear got into the big coop through the side window. Had my neighbor board it up. Got home yesterday evening. Dh checked the game cam and it was a different bear, much skinnier. He ripped the hardware cloth down and was in and out in less than 2 minutes. 130 in the am thursday. A head count and feathers says he got two of my pullets. Busy making bear boards now. Just finished one. So beyond angry. I hope these boards do lots of damage to these bears. I know they are effective against grizzlies. The cheeps and my cat are happy I am back. Everyone demanded treats. Start my new job today. Looking forward to it. Have a good day all.

Picture of bear boards please.

I mix feeds if I'm going to make a switch. If you're using mash or crumbles try mixing with yogurt for a bit. Though I like pellets since they don't waste as much feed.

I started out with 8 different breeds and worked from that.

I ordered three hens of each, with the exception of the Frizzles. I now have only one little Frizzle left. She'll be eight if she makes it to March.

Now if you don't plan to hatch it won't matter much. If you do plan to hatch you'll need room for those replacements.

Some Chickens dont like change ...The key is to do a gradual change ..
If you slowly mix a little bit of it with something they do know it may be easier for them to accept
"What That Is Food ? " " No Way ! "
Mine get change all the time ...What ever is left over..that humans dont want ... is their treat.
Well they had a fresh treat sunday ...I was gone for 3 hours ...some got in the garden ..
They had a Vege Sampler - Green Tomatoes , cabbage , lettuce ..probably more I havent found yet ...
I planted too many beans ...why did I plant a whole row ?

.. chicken treats will be beans SOON !
my hubby said " well at least you know what they like now .."

Is there a back up plan for Chicken Stock? Cold Spring Farms In Sharon Springs is organic feed company I just learned about today anybody use their feed? I change green feeds daily what every abundant, 50% grain feed change over monthly. Sad is when your dog eats more vegetables then your Kid!
