NY chicken lover!!!!

Some Chickens dont like change ...The key is to do a gradual change ..
If you slowly mix a little bit of it with something they do know it may be easier for them to accept
"What That Is Food ? " " No Way ! "
Mine get change all the time ...What ever is left over..that humans dont want ... is their treat.
Well they had a fresh treat sunday ...I was gone for 3 hours ...some got in the garden ..
They had a Vege Sampler - Green Tomatoes , cabbage , lettuce ..probably more I havent found yet ...
I planted too many beans ...why did I plant a whole row ?
he.gif
.. chicken treats will be beans SOON !
my hubby said " well at least you know what they like now .."

Thanks for the tip for a gradual mix, my 2 little ones are now 10 & 9 weeks, and have almost finished their bag of starter crumbs, which the packaging says to feed until 10 weeks. My 2 bigger chickens are on layers pellets, so I was reading up on here this weekend, tips on how to manage feeding when we introduce them in a few weeks time. The general consensus seems to be it's fine for adults to eat grower food, as long as they have access to oyster shell, not OK for younger chicks to eat layers pellets. As the grower food only comes in 50# bags I'm hoping they all like it - but no-one had mentioned mixing it in while they still are eating the food they are used to, so I'll pick some up this week and see how that goes.

We too are suddenly over run with beans - but found it works great for us to just top and tail them, quickly blanch them, and then freeze them whole - we lay them out individually on a baking tray and slide into freezer, then when frozen, transfer to a zip lock bag. This way we can pull out whatever quantity we want over the winter, rather than have a brick of frozen beans that have to be used all at once. Great addition to any kind of stew in the slow cooker. We froze our first batch of carrot chunks over the weekend too - the chickens enjoyed the carrot tops!

taking a shot here! I have a broody who has been sitting on golf balls for 4 weeks, I had some shipped eggs in the bator to give her, but even though 2 made it to lock down and 1 pipped.. none survived! I hate to break her now and am wondering if anyone has any chicks day old or close.. near me, for sale! I am in WNY, above the PA border. Thanks all!!

I hope you find some. I have some but I'm over 4 hours from you.

Is there a back up plan for Chicken Stock?  Cold Spring Farms In Sharon Springs is organic feed company I just learned about today anybody use their feed?   I change green feeds daily what every abundant, 50% grain feed change over monthly.  Sad is when your dog eats more vegetables then your Kid!

I'm curious about this too. Is there a location we could reserve for that date so there is less pressure on one person?

Traditionally, there is only one Chickenstock a year and it's held by a thread member. This year's possible second one was different from the norm. I don't think anyone else is going to be willing to throw one together this last minute if Nutty has decided against it, but there will be one next year. A member named Sonew is hosting at her place.

Ok. I understand now. Is each year's Chickenstock usually in late Spring?

It's usually in the Spring sometime. Last year it was on the 17th of May, and this year the 30th, so usually around that time. I don't think Sonew has set a date yet, she's just said she will host it. And I think Tab said she'll have it again (she had it last year) in 2017.

Let me know when you are ready for me to pick them up. Maybe Wednesday or Thursday? Is there just the 2 more eggs left?

There are five. I'm pretty sure I heard movement in at least two. I'm really bummed, but my marans sit but I don't usually get many chicks because the coop gets so hot I think. I also don't have a good light to candle the marans eggs. I think hatching requires a cooler area.

So I have three under a C. Rock and two under Big Delores. One of Big Delores is a quitter, I'm pretty sure. There are veins but it should be near done today. I'll candle tonight again.

I will be pulling all eggs this week from the Marans and the C. Rock and Big Delores. They've been sitting far too long.

There is a new C. Rock on eggs and a Delaware went broody the end of last week. They're on Del eggs.

Perhaps you should bring a couple of more eggs just in case. If you'd like. I can replace any duds of the Delaware eggs with Duck eggs. I should be able to see some life by the end of this week.

TTFN,

Rancher

Anyone call Melissa about this chickenstock thing? I'm about to send her a card, even though I don't know her last name. FYI I'm not good with names, It's better if I use your BYC name.

See now spring is a good time since most folks are buying chicks and all that. Plus folks are planting and gearing up for summer. I told everyone no more trips in the spring. I'll be lucky if I get even a few tomatoes. Plus I gave away to many chicks again cuz I wasn't going to be here to take care of them.

Next spring I want this place over run with Marans and Delawares.

Rain today. No outside work. Well perhaps some weed whacking. I can do that in the rain.

I have a post I printed off line, in front of me.
