Some Chickens dont like change ...The key is to do a gradual change ..
If you slowly mix a little bit of it with something they do know it may be easier for them to accept
"What That Is Food ? " " No Way ! "
Mine get change all the time ...What ever is left over..that humans dont want ... is their treat.
Well they had a fresh treat sunday ...I was gone for 3 hours ...some got in the garden ..
They had a Vege Sampler - Green Tomatoes , cabbage , lettuce ..probably more I havent found yet ...
I planted too many beans ...why did I plant a whole row ?.. chicken treats will be beans SOON !![]()
my hubby said " well at least you know what they like now .."
Thanks for the tip for a gradual mix, my 2 little ones are now 10 & 9 weeks, and have almost finished their bag of starter crumbs, which the packaging says to feed until 10 weeks. My 2 bigger chickens are on layers pellets, so I was reading up on here this weekend, tips on how to manage feeding when we introduce them in a few weeks time. The general consensus seems to be it's fine for adults to eat grower food, as long as they have access to oyster shell, not OK for younger chicks to eat layers pellets. As the grower food only comes in 50# bags I'm hoping they all like it - but no-one had mentioned mixing it in while they still are eating the food they are used to, so I'll pick some up this week and see how that goes.
We too are suddenly over run with beans - but found it works great for us to just top and tail them, quickly blanch them, and then freeze them whole - we lay them out individually on a baking tray and slide into freezer, then when frozen, transfer to a zip lock bag. This way we can pull out whatever quantity we want over the winter, rather than have a brick of frozen beans that have to be used all at once. Great addition to any kind of stew in the slow cooker. We froze our first batch of carrot chunks over the weekend too - the chickens enjoyed the carrot tops!
