They are very pretty! Phoreda has a bunch of the golden ones. The Millies new home will be started tomorrow. Can't believe I've run out of coops for everyone! I'm being 'godmother' to 3 pullets for a friend until his faveroles have finished growing out, they are currently housed in the duck hut! I think I finally have caught Morehens disease......

Phoreda is selling me 2 of her Roo's. I get the Saturday to start the process of integration. They will have 18 girls to keep them occupied until we figure out a permanent housing solution . They might get a coop of their own come spring with some more spitzhauben. Depends on how convincing I can be.

My Morehens Disease is in remission, but it is very aggressive so I expect it to return with vengeance. I have a barn out back that is in need of repair. Once fixed up (which could take anywhere from 1-3 years), I plan on the main coop being back there with only littles in the current barn/coop. This means more littles and more bigs in my future. I can figure out my favorite breeds by then.

Well, Wings started at 5:45 this morning but the window in the coop was closed making it much more tolerable. I let him out a short while ago and all had been well. Then he just crowed again at 6:45. Ugh. Just when I thought he'd be safe from the stew pot for a while.

akaruby, my experience so far is mixed. I have 15 cross breed chicks. My favorite is a cross. She is docile with us and other chickens. I wish I could make 10 of her. Her dad is an EE and her mom is probably a Leghorn but could be an EE or "laying mix." I have 14 pure chicks. Ameraucana, Brahma, Legbar, Plymouth Rock, Marans, and Welsummers. So far the Ameraucanas have been most friendly and mellow. The Brahmas are smallest and more skittish. The others are not really determined yet. The older kids and I are trying to handle them to see the best fit. So far Ameraucana and cross breeds are winners.

My favorite:

She is gorgeous! There are some "barnyard mix" chicks on craigslist in the area, they don't say what mixes but maybe I'll get in touch with them. All my dogs are mutts and I think they're the best :)

have your RIR chicks started laying yet ?  I found a couple of eggs out in the chicken yard, which is very unusual for my girls.

Yes, mine have been laying for a bit now. They are also under foot every time I let them out! Nosey girls always trying to work me for goodies. They thoroughly inspect the prison fencing around my gardens everyday hoping to find a breach so they can get in and eat myveggies, I hope you are enjoyin yours as much. The boys dressed out at a decent weight and their father is happy that they are gone!

3 day weekend for me and today is do little day! I will do housekeeping tomorrow on the coops. Have to get fencing up to give Legolas coop more room tor move around. Rained all night last night and we needed it. Cooler too and everyone is happy about that.

Be well all. Off to deliver eggs and run errands.

So since I rehomed my ISA browns to my friend due to noise/neighbor problems, I really don't have any laying hens or good laying breeds. I have a cochin and 2 silkies. I've been doing some research on quiet breeds that lay well, even though it seems quietness is more of a individual chicken thing. I've come across barnevelders, buckeyes, delawares and of course orpingtons. Do any of you have experience with these breeds? I just want a docile chicken that's not too huge and noisy. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks all!

Come for a visit. I swear if you didn't see chickens you wouldn't know they're any. MOST of the time.

Chickens squawk, dogs bark, people talk. Heck my neighbors radio is louder.

Well - although I love my Delawares, they are quite assertive and loud, Barnies have been great, consistent layers & quiet, no experience woth Orpys' but I'm told they are quiet and docile. Hows' the 'move the coop' thing going?

I don't find my Dels a problem. Unless someone is in the nest they want, but all hens are that way.

I've C.Rocks and they're nice too.

Orps can be nice.

My Marans are good too.

I think the more room they have the quieter they are.
