NY chicken lover!!!!

I would only use moth balls as a last resort ...cant stand them .
Woodruff can be used for moths .

Fox pee - I thought how do you get them to donate ? LOL...
Maybe I will ask the neighbor to walk his dog in our back lot ..
I have a Light & a radio out there now ...all night ...it has worked so far ..the corn probably would have been for the chickens anyway ....

Thank you! I'm not sure when I'll start hatching again. I have a favorite cross-breed pullet that I really want to start laying before we get rid of our current awesome rooster. I'm sad that I may have to wait for the next roo to grow, which would be fertile eggs in December. I'll be looking for an incubator with auto turner, because I think that manual turning and too much messing with the incubator was the reason for my 60% hatch rate. Again, thanks for the info.
Tao~ Don't beat yourself up over a 60% hatch rate...that's really good! I have had some zero to 100% in a commercial incubator. There are so many variables that go into a successful hatch that are completely out of your control. Automatic turners are great though. Then you don't have to stress on missing a turning and don't have to open up the cover to disrupt your heat and humidity!

Let me know if anyone in the Syracuse area is looking for roosters. I have a few extra i would be willing to let go cheap...silkies, bielfelder, sulmtaler, cream crested legbar, isbar-black & tons of easter egger roo's.

Unfortunately, ten of my roosters have been a meal to my neighbors dog. Yesterday I made it very clear that was the last time that dog was to be on my property. Luckily my two blue isbars are very savvy fliers and flew half way up my maple tree...had to be **** near 30'. Anyway, I need to reduce my flock.

Sorry to hear you have lost so many roosters. I have a rooster and a cockerel that I won't be keeping. I haven't exactly figured out what I'm doing with them yet. The cockerel is too small for eating. And, I was hoping to keep my rooster until my pullets started laying. He has been quite disruptive though and we're trying not to annoy the neighbors. I am currently managing to keep him quiet this morning- I'm pretty sure he considers me the head rooster right now. I knew I'd have a hard time getting rid of him as he's been a favorite of mine since my daughter named him Mary 4 1/2 months ago. He is getting to be a great size (and volume) for soup though. :(

Has anyone tried hatching the first few eggs from a pullet? The rooster has been mating with one of the pullets regularly. She hasn't started laying but has red comb and is noisier than ever. If we stew the rooster, and she starts laying soon, and has fertile first eggs, will there be any problems with trying to hatch her first eggs? It's a combination that I really want to see. They are both bearded, docile, pretty birds. So, should I borrow the incubator again, or let it go?

First you need to catch a fox. Then you squeeze it like you would an orange. When you've squeezed all the juice out you toss it in the compost pile.

This is what I found on line:

"After you train them to hit the bottle, it is really quite simple."

Urine is collected from animals in game farms, zoos and preserves.

I've often seen them posted to CL but rarely have I had anyone willing to pay. Most just want them for free food. It's unrealistic to expect folks to feed and harbor every rooster there is. Businesswise it makes no financial sense.

You can take them to an auction but don't expect to get a great deal.

I just found this on a business card I have. "High as the Sky Auction" 725 US HWY 231 Not sure where it is, I've never been.

I wish you well,

Rancher

Thanks Rancher. I have some absolutely stunning roosters. I would rather them go to a good home and lose a little bit of my investment then in my freezer... especially if someone needs them for their breeding line. Almost all of them are from Greenfire. Seems like everything I ordered from them turned out to crow! LOL

My heart says...I can keep them all...I certainly have more than enough room for them. I did process four last week. First time through that...sucked.

Well now I do like the Cream Legbar and I could cross it into my EE's I think BUT I also like my EE rooster.

I also like the Isbar, but again someone would have to go.

I only keep EE's for egg color and add the odd rooster for gene pool depth. My EE rooster is large and I like that.

Right now I've lavender hens mostly. I'm crossing into my Marans for Olive eggers. My Marans lay a nice Extra large egg so crossing into them results in a larger Olive egg.

Should you hatch chicks of either breed let me know. I'd like to add some hens. Too I'm not set up for another breed. I've got Marsh Daisies to deal with before the snow flies.

In short. Did you know? Wild grapes have male and female vines. This is why I have vines with not grapes. I did not learn this on the internet search, rather from Carol Bradford from the Syracuse News paper.

TTFN,

Rancher

I still have four 9 week roosters....all awesome breeds. Dominique, Cochin, naked neck and a blue favacuana. They grew up together so they should be good together. Save me from having to send them to the pot! I live in the tristate area and am willing to meet you.
