NY chicken lover!!!!

We've had a fox come visiting and only one guinea is left. Sorry ...all the other chickens are okay ?
We also are replacing flooring in the dining room. DH sawed boards in the house one night this week and I ended up having to rewash my dishes and everything else in the kitchen area.
MY DH is always sawing something ...that stuff sure gets around & tracks in ...where you able to convince him to move outside ?

Do any of you buy egg cartons at a reasonable price? They are 49c at Tractor Supply- no thanks.
Ive got a box of egg cartons that I bought ...I dont use them ..mediums ..I can see how much I paid for them .33.99 for 100 or 125 count I forgot which it was
if you are interested ? I could ship them or we could meet ...I am in Jordan
I ve got so many used cartons overflowing here ..

Well now I don't know.  I called my doctor and I could swear  I heard him say "Take two chicks and call me in the morning".

Seriously?  For me it's how many can I responsibly take care of.  Sometimes I've paid to have help cleaning coops. If things get out of hand I give birds away. I know I'll hatch more chicks than I need so I either sell them or give them away. Their welfare comes first.

My first year, I gave away 9 birds that just were not fitting in. Three SLW's, GLW's and Aussies. Backs all bald I just couldn't take it. Not all breeds work well together.

Last winter I had one coop completely empty.

So my point?  When you find you're slacking off and birds aren't up to your standard then you know you've to many.  Don't become a "collector".  Cat's, dogs or Chickens it's still the same.

That said. I've got two EE chicks for free. They're together about the same age not sure the xes but if you want them you can have them. Winter is coming and I've got others to deal with. Send me a PM. They're not under any heat at this point.

Course if you'd like to trade 15 minutes of coop cleaning I won't say no. I'll fill the wheel barrow you dump it in the compost.
I can responsibly care for many birds. I have 9 acres and good dogs who provide great critter protection. As well as a barn big enough to house 100 and a great grow out coop and run. I have 2 of my 5 kids that help daily with the chickens so that's no a problem. The only problem is the king of the house said no. I'm going to sneak a few in though and see how long it takes him to notice. If he doesn't I will just keep adding until the barn is satisfactory. I'm thinking 60 or so is good. Most of those will be home hatched, hopefully by broodies.

Searching for inexpensive hatching eggs to set by 9/21. Why? Morehens Disease. Hatching addiction. Also searching for a good incubator. I'd use the one I borrowed as a hatcher, I think. I'm a planner, so I think hatching eggs allows me some sense of control over my plans. Also, I think hatching somehow makes me feel more protected from AI and other diseases. I am pretty protected from predators, so an illness that could take out my flock scares me.

Sorry for rambling. Not many people understand my crazy.

Well now I can get you some eggs. What's cheap? I'm always open to barter. How many eggs you need? EE's if you like. Got one hen lays olive eggs. She and her sister should hatch hens that lay olive eggs too. Roos over lavender and two black hens/ Birchen Marans and Black Ameraucana/EE cross.

I keep a close flock mainly. No chickens in. I hatch my own replacements. PM me if you're interested.

Someone just asked me how many I had. I said chicken people don't count chickens. I say about 40 but there may be more or less. I just don't talk about how many then DW doesn't worry.

Good Morning! Is it weird that I'm having a good day because I found 30 feathers in the coop this morning? The answer is yes, have been so worried about my chicken Sylvia's weird behavior thinking she was sick, but she started a molt, then didn't lose any feathers for a while, acted very strangely, and is now definitely molting again, but back to normal behaviour. So hopefully that's all that's going on.

Only not so great thing about this day is my toothache / faceache, emergency dental appt last night revealed I'd broken a chunk off a filling, cracked the tooth, and have a root abscess, have to get a root canal, but they don't have an appt till next Tuesday. Still, started antibiotics and some pain meds, so should be back on track soon, and the associated pressure on my sinus will ease so my eye stops leaking - everyone thinks I'm crying! Maybe I'll head outside for some chicken therapy - watching 'the girls' never gets boring, and I don't have to go into work until later today.

How's this Thursday going for everyone else?
Purple Iris, So sorry to hear of your issues with tooth/facial/sinus pain. I know how that feels I had the same things happening for so long. I hope you feel better soon.

Newbie from Rochester, NY! Hello to all my New Yorkers! Any others from Rochester?

No chicks yet, just starting the process....have a zoning board meeting in the beginning of Oct for Hubby and I to apply for our special use permit to have hens. Once that is completed....full steam ahead!

So much great insight and info on here, everyone is so knowledgeable and friendly!

Hello and welcome. It is a wonderful, mostly friendly and helpful group of people you have joined. Good luck with your zoning board permit.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the site. We are located in western N.Y. The farm is in Gasport. We have many chickens ,ducks, geese, pigeons, guinea fowl, turkeys, a couple peacocks and a few goats. I've only been to the Springville aution. However the one in Bath N.Y. will be on my to do list next spring. I've ordered a majority of my birds from many hatcheries and have bough-ten a few locally and at the auction.
Welcome to BYC!!!
