They are doing very well thanks! I had to cull 1 rooster with too much attitude

. Shame - he was the prettiest. One little girl is laying every other day, the other 3 girls I kept are not interested in the roosters or laying eggs....

She's adjusting well! She still thinks she'd like to try to get out of the run when I open it, but otherwise she seems to be doing okay. She can't get up on the roost, so she roosts either on the edge of the nesting box or the feeder. I've had to put the feeder on the ground since she can't get the feed with it hanging and swinging when she tries to eat. Otherwise she is doing well. I'm just hoping she lays eggs that are a different color than the cemani eggs so when she starts laying again I can tell them apart.

Not an idiot! We all make mistakes, no -one can know everything!. Do you have a garage? large dog crate? garden shed? Maybe not ideal, but will do in a pinch. If you can get a large dog crate - borrow, beg etc. and stash it in a shed or something. Be inventive...

The cold weather is likely not to be too cold for another month or so, that will give you plenty of time to get them integrated. Take a deep breath - all will work out.

I am sorry about your poor birds.. I doubt it came from a neighbor, but you never know. I think it's pretty much everywhere. I had one bird die maybe three years ago that I suspected had mareks but then none of my other birds had any problems, even the babies. So it was likely something else (second possible diagnosis was that she ate a mushroom in the yard).. I hope it gets better soon.

The only reason I say it could have come from the neighbour's coop are these #1 I can see the co-op from my yard feathers & have blown in across the yard, alley, street and into my yard these feathers being white and barred black and white chicken feather... of which I have neither I think her birds are white LeghornX and Barred Rock, she also has a couple of Red Stars.
#2 she walks her dogs past the house at least 3 times a day... sometimes in her coop boots...I know they are her coop boots because they are bright yellow knee high barn boots with cute little chickens on them, I stopped her long enough to ask her where she got them.

BakerzDozen, so sorry to hear about your birds I know how you feel - I had a brush with mycoplasma a couple years ago. Luckily unlike Marek's it can be eradicated from your proper by culling the infected birds, bleaching everything down, and letting the coop sit empty for a few months. I know how horrible this must be for you.

How is little Midget doing? I know she was a favorite of you and your husband's and I hope you haven't lost her.

Midget is fine!!! The friendliest little **** we have. My husband came home last week and said "I love that chicken." I knew exactly who he was talking about.(Everyone needs to understand one thing about my husband... he was a self proclaimed chicken hater) He had worked on farms all of his life an was stuck cleaning the coops on all of them. He was lead to believe chickens were nasty, dirty, lice infested birds. He is part of the reason I couldn't get chickens before. I showed him that chickens and their coops were only as dirty as their keepers allowed them to be.
Midget is a character. She is healthy and happy at this point. She still hangs out with her 2 favorite birds a Marans x named Omelette and her big buddy Margaret Australorp.
I wish I could tape her voice we she allows us to hold her... it's this funny little cooing garble...almost like she is telling us the secrets of the coop. Unlike any of the other birds. She is the first to break security of the enclosures we for them and she knows her name. and I believe she was actually the first to lay an egg.
Midget and then Rudi...
Everything got all messed up when this illness struck I was so wrapped up in trying to find out what was wrong that I didn't get to share any good news.
We got out first eggs at 17weeks. Midget and the next day Rudi... Rudi got her name because she immediately became broody. The only reason we knew Midget layed was because she's the only girl we have that lays white eggs.

dosage I have no idea ? I would start with a teaspoon or tablespoon per cup of feed ?
I would probably give them the cows liver ..that is easier to do a dosage .

Hi everyone!

Bakerz, how utterly disappointing this must be to lose so many of them. You've got me trying to do more research as like the last few folks posted, I'm a newbie too. I'm glad that we have the more seasoned folks helping us through our backyard chicken experiences.

Rancher, I saw you mentioned one helping another with culling. I'd like to help sometime and learn how to cull myself as well. We live between Liverpool and Phoenix area. We also travel to Auburn and Cortland once in a while. So we're open to learning and helping out if anyone is up for it sometime too.

Beer, Thanks for the lesson on the types of processing wrap to freeze the birds with. It was certainly helpful knowing the difference.

It's been very busy around here. My husband had the last 3 days off and most of you men know that when the guys are home that hunny-do list comes out with a whole lot of stuff to do. Luckily we got a lot done. Still working on that mound in my flower garden but it's looking SO much better! Had some Dr.'s appointments and testing done. Much or it has come out normal and one test came back with an infection. I knew something wasn't right with me. I've just been off. Most likely due to all the stress lately. A little rest will do good. My mom is coming tomorrow with one of the littles in our family to play with our daughter.

I have to say that I've been off facebook for a week now for the most part and I have missed every news casting local and national this week. My mood has been SO much better and I the closeness I feel with my family, doing chores together, going back to playing board games, reading together and even listening to devotional podcasts has been such a positive change over the last week.

I used to frequent a website called Homesteadblogger before we moved back home to CNY. I missed the comradarie and opportunity to learn the basic skills of homemaking and homesteading. After much intrepedation, I joined facebook with my husband. He likes it to keep in touch but I'm honestly not a fan of it. I don't like the drama and for me, sites like this one I get more out of because I am able to talk with people who actually DO things that can teach or help someone learn. I like to get something out of it and put it to good use. So luckily the past week while it's been quiet off the internet. I can come back here and see what's going on with everyone and their chickens but just feel that great sense of peace and satisfaction that we've gotten so many things done and actually enjoyed ourselves doing it as a family.

I hope you all have a great weekend and Bakerz, I pray for continued healing for your girls and guys over there. Hopefully no more behavior that leads to sickness. Bugs be gone!
