NY chicken lover!!!!

Midget is fine!!! The friendliest little **** we have.:) My husband came home last week and said "I love that chicken." I knew exactly who he was talking about.(Everyone needs to understand one thing about my husband... he was a self proclaimed chicken hater) He had worked on farms all of his life an was stuck cleaning the coops on all of them. He was lead to believe chickens were nasty, dirty, lice infested birds. He is part of the reason I couldn't get chickens before. I showed him that chickens and their coops were only as dirty as their keepers allowed them to be.
Midget is a character. She is healthy and happy at this point. She still hangs out with her 2 favorite birds a Marans x named Omelette and her big buddy Margaret Australorp.
I wish I could tape her voice we she allows us to hold her... it's this funny little cooing garble...almost like she is telling us the secrets of the coop. Unlike any of the other birds. She is the first to break security of the enclosures we for them and she knows her name. :D and I believe she was actually the first to lay an egg.
Midget and then Rudi...
Everything got all messed up when this illness struck I was so wrapped up in trying to find out what was wrong that I didn't get to share any good news.
We got out first eggs at 17weeks. Midget and the next day Rudi... Rudi got her name because she immediately became broody. The only reason we knew Midget layed was because she's the only girl we have that lays white eggs.
I hope all is well with you and all your girls and how is Lacy doing?

Good to hear Midget is well!

Lacie is doing good! She enjoys having other geese to hang around with. I actually just got a few new pictures of her the other day.

This one I took for the benefit of everyone who goes off that all geese are mean and nasty when I tell them I have geese.

And one where she demonstrates just how spoiled she is. Why should she eat from the feeder with everyone else when she can have me hold the scoop for her to eat out of instead?

I plan on getting a male gosling to raise this spring so she can have a mate, since I am about 90% sure both of the geese I bought this spring are female too. And even if they are males, I have discovered that they are half Canada goose, so they won't be fertile and wouldn't be able to fertilize her eggs anyway. I still haven't decided on what breed gander to get her - I'll probably end up going with roman tufted, same breed as her.

Otherwise, all is well. Lost a cemani hen randomly the other day, one of my oldest hens has gone half blind, and I had one hen hang herself up by her leg over a fence, but that one seems to be recovering. Not much else going on otherwise. I did successfully hatch some chicks for the Halloween hatch a long today, so that was good!

Great thing about vacuum sealed bags besides long term storage is they can be used as boil in bags. Never done one in the bag in the crock pot before but giving it a try. Cooking it tender, picking it apart and making homemade chicken noodle soup tomorrow.
Put it in still frozen in hot water on high.
Frozen over a yr ago September, no freezer burn, have a few more to eat, just keep forgetting they're in there.

I know one of you has answered this before but I can't remember. I'm making homemade apple cider, no sugar or sweetener added as my son is diabetic. It sweetened all natural by adjusting the fruit in it. After it's all done can I give the flock the mess of fruit I strain out?

Heck yeah. I do mine.

I make applesauce but I like to use a variety of apples and add very little sugar. About 3/4 cup per batch. That's about 3 quarts, 3 pints and a jelly jar or two. I do variety of sizes since I have senior friends I give it to and figure they won't eat a jar before it's spoils. Me? A pint is two servings.

Also over ripe apples are sweeter. Some of mine sit a bit first. I've a book all about apples varieties and which are tart/firm, sweet/firm etc. etc.

They say the seeds have arsenic in them but I haven't had any problem feeding them apple pulp.
Actually store bought apple cider has no sugar added either, but it does have a preservative in it to prevent it from fermenting. So I press my own. I add about five pounds of sugar to five gallons, but there is no sugar in it after about a month Lol.

All is well today. I just stopped in to say "hello". :) everyone was let out to free range for awhile. I hid some tin cans in the yard with bits and goodies in them, for the girls. I also made homemade chickens toys yesterday. A 16oz plastics soda bottle that I drilled about 9 or so large holes in .the chickens have to move the bottles for the BOSS and corn to fall out. They seem to like figuring it out. At first they just tried to peck it to death to get it out cause they could see it but could get it. Then one figured it out. :) they started moving it with their beaks and feet.
Pretty smart chickens. :)

Certainly ! I gave mine the apple remains ! I gave my flock a treat today of apples that I canned last year ...mixed with bird seed .
