They finally turned up - after I called the 1 800 number, waited on hold forever, got someone, told them they were going to die if I didn't get them today, and the person opened up some sort of thing to find them. However, it is not happy news The seller did all she could - they had two heat packs and a cup of grogel. The heat packs had gone cold, since it has been over 72 hours since they were shipped. The cup of grogel was flipped upside down with all the grogel still in it, so the chicks couldn't eat it. This tells me that their box was flipped upside down at one point.

Unfortunately most of them were DOA. I'm trying to bring a couple back from the brink of death, but they're looking rough. One died as I was trying to revive them already.

I'm so sorry Pyxis. I sure hope the seller and/or USPS do what they can to make it right. Prayers for the surviving chicks.

Sorry to hear that Pyxis.
Rancher, I was doing the same when I had a bunch of my SandHill white giants die...didn't have many to begin with.

SandHill offers free replacement or refund on DOA chicks, only if documented at the PO. I checked, all good. Went home and realized there was only 22 chicks not 25, the min order is 25. I wasn't supposed to get the langshans I ordered they told me, got red sussex free instead. Paper work said three langshan, there was only one...? Wish they didn't send it.
A few of the giants and couple sussex died within a couple days, never had shipped chicks die before. Two of the giants were not very good looking, one had no tail, and I believe was a manx rumpies.
After $$ I have two nice pullets and two cockerels, about the same with the sussex except keeping a third pullet with too dark of color but body type is better then the other two.
Have super really nice white giants and red sussex, after culling, just not many, hopefully they breed and hatch as good as they look, color and type.

Thanks everyone. I do so far have two survivors. One was the one that looked the worst out of the three alive ones. It was stone cold, not moving (I only knew it was alive because I happened to see it twitch just barely) and its bowels had released all over it - something that happens when animals die. For the first hour it just laid under the heat lamp, barely moving. When it did get up, it kept falling over backwards. When it got a little better, it would try to stand, and then start turning circles instead until it fell over. I really thought it was going to die, but it has pulled through and is now eating and drinking. I have become pretty attached to the little thing, although I keep referring to it to myself as the poopy chick, which I need to stop before it sticks and becomes its name. The poor thing had a rough enough start to life, it doesn't also need to be named that!

The other was well enough to peep at the post office, but not still not in good shape. When the PO lady called she said the box was peeping so that got my hopes up but it was just the one, which I could hear when I got there. That one was much easier to get back in better shape.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed for them.

I am definitely going to be crossing my fingers for those two little things. It doesn't make up for the loss and the absolute incompetence that has happened, but I am so happy for those two to have pulled through such a rough start. Keep us updated.

The post office shares some of this responsibility ...I think you said it was express ?
did the seller follow the proper procedures for live animals ?
why did the seller send them now ? did they just hatch ?
I think it is best to send them on a Monday - in a no Holiday week ..so they have a chance to make it .

They would send them overnight on a Tuesday and it took until Thursday or Friday to get them. The P.O. never updated where they were in a timely manner because sometimes their scanners don't download until the end of the day. Boxes of dead, forzen or gasping chicks...heartbreaking...heartbreaking...heartbreaking.

But, what do you do? You want that breed and you either get in the car and take a road trip or take the chance with the PO.

I hope the babies you have left make it for you and you come to some resolve with your shipment. I will be praying for your little fuzzybutts...

There used be independent courier services around here. I wonder if something like that would be cost prohibitive? I'm considering my options knowing that I'll want some new Brabanter genetics in the Spring. Maybe a road trip would be fun?
