Most of my chickens look the same after molt, but Speckled Sussex get more white each year, and I was used to seeing Dottie with a more sparsely speckled head, now they are pretty similar.

Thank you everyone. Still no luck finding them. And of course USPS apparently hasn't staffed its phone line today due to the holiday, so they aren't answering. The local facility where they are doesn't open until 8 their time, which would be 11 here. I will try to call, but I suspect I will get no answer again. Gramma did pass my info along to someone who works at the PO and she has graciously offered to try to help me with this. Gramma, thanks for that.

As of now no sign of them. Cheeka left a message with a supervisor at my local sort facility but she hasn't messaged me again yet so I doubt she's heard anything back.

I've also sent two messages to the seller over the past two days just to keep them aware of the situation and so far I've heard nothing back :/ It's very possible she just hasn't seen them yet but the way this whole thing is going it just makes me nervous.

It's really long - it's a post I just put up on my work in progress website for my farm. I didn't want to copy it down here because of the length, but it's about the horrible experience I've had with the PO today. Just wanted to share with you guys because it'll make me feel better and you guys will understand better than anyone how I'm feeling, if you want to take the time to read it.

Well this is what I know having worked for the PO more than 18 years.

The hubbs have changed in the name of $$$. So there are less processing hubbs than in times past. I live near a hubb. Hubb being the main sorting place for surrounding POs.

Now in my case we do not sort. If I send a priority package to someone in syracuse it goes first to Rochester and than boomerangs back to Syracuse. That being said you may or may not know where the package goes each step or leg of the journey from California.

I also know that the last few times I ordered chicks they were late even though they were sent overnight. One batch were doa. Another they called and said I could come and pick up my chicks at the main hubb or wait til the next day. Mind you I had worked at the hubb and live not more than 10-15 minutes away. I of course drove and picked them up. As I recall one or two chicks had died.

All that being said. It is very important to have your chicks go out in the morning, not in the afternoon. If the chicks are sent out in the afternoon there is a good chance they will be sitting for some hours waiting for pick up. You want them in the system asap. Anyone shipping chicks should check to see what time the express mail is picked up in the morning or be there the minute the po opens.

The same would hold true for hatching eggs. Eggs lose there viability after a few days. Ship out five day old eggs and there's a good chance you'll have problems.

I hope things work out okay, but keep in mind that overnight is guaranteed. So if your chicks were not delivered on time you should expect the seller to refund to YOU the shipping YOU paid for. Only one seller ever did this for me even though I contacted all of them. Unless of course they replace your shipment with another.

Thanks Rancher! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they arrive tomorrow but if not I will be calling the customer service number, that's for sure. And also trying the post office that's in the sorting hub that the tracking last has them at.

Do you use a timer? Anyone want to recommend an outdoor timer?

I bought a outside Stanley Light Timer last yr around the holidays at Christmas Tree Shops for $10. It's two outlet and light sensing. Can be set from dusk to dawn or set from dusk then off in 2-10 hrs and repeats everyday. I wanted a regular timer, thought that one was, didn't read it, but it might work just as good.
I can't tell you how good it works though, decided not to use it being the girls were not laying yet, young. Then they ended up laying all winter with no light Lol!
Looks heavy duty and has a spot on the back to hang it from a nail or screw.

Lap my thoughts have been with you, and your wonderful horse. Lucky to have had these 13 years with you. Luv, praying for your sister! And Pyxix, I was so sad to hear of your troubles with the disease. Hope things are better on that front. I was traveling, but would check in when I had down time.

Most of my molders are done and looking great, but two are looking ugly having started late, Eunice and one of the barred rocks. But I started their light therapy, because we were only getting one to three eggs a day. Things should be better soon. one problem with all the newly refeathered hens is that I can't tell the difference between Dottie and Speckles, two SS hens. Somehow the new feathers have changed their looks...

Thank you. Picture was as we were waiting this morning for the vet. It is done, still really hard though. It will get better with time. Miss seeing her on the lawn or watching out her stall door. Heartbroken. But the vet confirmed it was the right choice, her right knee had 0% flexion, left knee had 15%. She didn't show the pain, but it became obviously harder to get around.
My Anconas gain more white with each molt, one more than the other. Luckily their combs are different so I can tell them apart.
