NY chicken lover!!!!

My poor chickens are going stir crazy. We have had a flock of hawks flying over head for 3 days now. Is it illegal to shoot a hawk if it attacks your flock?

No, not legal to shoot birds of prey, even if they are killing your livestock, they are Federally protected. I didn't know this either until I posted on another thread that I would have shot one but forgot to take the safety off and it
got away. I looked it up, just about any animal is fair game if it is attacking your livestock but not birds of prey.
I came home to my best white jersey giant pullet dead outside the run, didn't know what did it so I put a trail cam on it. While bringing in groceries a small hawk was in the run attacking the rest, none ended up injured. All runs are covered now.
It sucked I didn't have many SOP giant pullets to begin with and she was one best ones. I had one other nice one we called 'hoppy', hopped since it was a chick. Kids were not happy when I culled her. Turned out she had a dislocated leg bone at the hip.
Down to only two good pullets for breeding.
Have one other huge body pullet but it doesn't have the dark willow legs so she's the one I'll be crossing into my white silkies.

Thank you all for the info. I guess the girls should be on out. According to the article if you have a good cockerel (got him) a good dog ( he will attack anything that goes after my chickens ) and can stomach the thought of the occasional loss your safe. My Golden Boy is vicious over his girls, he went after my puppy not to long ago. He loves the attention from them so he treats them like princesses. My rottweiler has made more than one critter run away. Tomorrow the girls run free.

My 2 boys are very alert to birds of prey ..we have them go over almost once a day ..
If you are home listen for their warning roooooo sound ...for air predators .
you can chase a hawk off with your presence ..going towards them ..
I have thrown stones at them ...I cant hit the side of the barn... they were in no danger ..but they left
It is just best to be on the alert when they are out ...I leave my kitchen window open to listen for sounds
Ive thought of putting mirrors on top of my coop to reflect light up ...I havent done it yet ...i think that might stop them from flying in that area

Have you seen these chickens in Tops ? Timers

Well the chickens laid 6 eggs today ...WOW ! 2 from the EE pullets . Im back in green.. wanted blue ones.. 2 more pullets need to lay ..

I wonder if the ones I sold lay blue eggs ?

I'm down two more cockerels - but this time it's a good thing! They're going to live with a coworker of mine. One silkie and one ayam cemani cull. They will have a flock of over 30 hens all to themselves, lucky boys. So that will leave me with just four cockerels that need to be rehomed or eventually eaten. One I think will be easy - he's a frizzle olive egger, so he's interesting enough that someone will probably want him. The other three are buff orp mixes and might not find homes so easily, but I'll still try.
For Heavens Sake ! what a relief ! I thought you lost 2 more

buff orp mixes what color ? Im not looking for any but pics might help enable some more hens disease ..
