NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a neighbor who's dogs run free. Luckily my rottweiler stays on my property so when intruders show up he solves the problem. He has 20 chickens that he will fight over. Well he mostly stays home. He enjoys playing with the horses next door. He's harmless though. He just runs with them.

Purpletie - sorry for all your aggravation. I just don't understand people - they don't care about your livestock and apparently they don't care what happens to their dog either. I suspect they thought that nothing would happen to them...kudos to you.

Ugh @Purpletie3 I'm so sorry u went thru that. Hugs to you. Thank you tho for going thru the litigation process and taking action. Your efforts there help all of us with chickens in our back yards. Thank you as well for relaying what you found regarding laws on the subject. Hope all is well with the rest of ur flock. It's nice to see u back on this thread.

Yes, I hear you all about neighbor's dogs. That is why everyone here is inside a fence, even though that wouldn't necessarily stop some dogs. Gordon is a black & tan coonhound with "ADD" & has so much energy. Runs free, chases cars & roams at least 1/2 mile on either side of us! We call him the love-able nuisance, because he does keep away most other predators even he is one himself. He routinely goes around the perimeter of the fence which is several hundred feet long on one side. The only thing he's ever killed is a baby rabbit that crawled out of the cage while waiting for the buyer to come.

Purple, I too am sorry for your trouble. I know you hated taking things to court but sometimes that the only way.

My new neighbors have a dog but I've yet to see her out except the one day she came over. I talked to the owner and he mentioned buying a run but so far nothing. I don't know what is going on with the dog since I've not see her out even to be taken for a walk.

I'm not anti dog but owners are responsible and anything that happens to the dog is their fault. Same with any other animal.

Purple, I'm sure you did all you could.

Thank you all for your kind words. Hope you all are winter ready...I am behind as always. I did get the chick house built so I will have no babies in the house this winter. I was so eager last winter and started my flock in November.

Moisture free is hard. I have the water inside on a heated base because i already had frozen water. Thakfully i had the bases in, just had to plug them in. I change my dropping boards every 2 days. I pit bag balm on their combs every other day, it helps. Havent had one with frost bite yet.
it isnt cold enough for frost bite yet ...you dont need to treat them now ..it has to be below 30 degrees & stay that way . if you open your coop during the day the moisture will vent some too .

All I have left to do is put the rest of my tarps up to help block wind
your coop looks pretty tightly closed up ...I wouldnt worry about drafts .
You see my coop ? I only have one solid wall on the back
2 walls are just slats of wood ..the front is totally open ...in the winter I cover the 3 sides with clear plastic .
Is it air tight ? No way ...they are just fine ...

Well I finally evicted the Pullets out of the baby run to prepare it for winter ...for storage ..it is all cleaned out
As soon as it has dried enough Im going to line it with plastic

The Young ones are in with the hens now ..
on their own roost for now

.I close up the smaller section on the right ...from the back to the center beam to the hen house ..so they only have to heat that.
Usually I just put up a couple blankets there ...open on the bottom right so they can go in the run part if they wish .
.I may box it in more temporarily this year as I have some free Press board. I can use

My four girls looked like pitiful rag dolls when I went out after work to check on them. Soaking wet... now I'm worrying they are in the coop catching pneumonia. .. it's well ventilated, but yeesh. I'm surprised they didn't hang out under the coop for the day. Dummies!

They should be okay ...longs it isnt a big draft . you can close it all up for the night ..it wont kill them
