NY chicken lover!!!!

Yes that JJ feeds.

No they won't slide off the roosts.

Rub some of that fat on their legs. They be nice an juicy come fricasseeing time.
Holy Moly! Thanks for telling me about JJ's. That bag was huge and the price was outstanding! Also bought the black sunflower seeds in a 50 lb bag and the blue spray someone else mentioned. Sprayed my hen and she was so much better. She just laid in my lap for awhile. I have to say she wasn't my favorite hen but she's become such a sweet girl. I managed to get the DE in their food, in their bedding, around the edges of the coop and the run. They were miffed at me after I bathed them in the stuff. It's not like they haven't been there before but I was getting dirty looks and squaks like no tomorrow.

CD's are hanging at different lengths and I added the cabbage tether someone mentioned. They were NOT having it tonight. Boy did I get the cold shoulder or too and quite the talkin to.

JJ Feeds was amazing. If my husband wasn't in such a hurry to get to work, I probably would have stayed longer. LOVED the dogs and cats around. My 4 year old daughter loved just petting them. Thanks again for sharing it. I would have never found it since it was off the beaten path. We've been near Apulia Rd. before but hadn't gone that far past. The straw was a little pricey at 6.00 a bale. But the rest seemed pretty reasonable. NOW I need to find some hay or straw for the run so they keep warm. I don't know what I'd do without everyone in here sharing. I got out of my comfort zone and crossed off a little dream of mine. Quite funny raising chickens in our backyard!

What are CDs hanging at different heights for?
I have been thinking I need to add some activities into the run for the chickens. They are so bored lately. Can you guys tell me about some things you have done?

Mine have an outdoor perch I made out of a natural branch that they love and hang out on all the time. I also will hang up a head of lettuce/cabbage by a string for them in the winter when they can't get out to free range and they see to have fun with that. A flock block is always good too - I just bought one yesterday for the cemanis since they don't get to free range. Also there's this thing out now called the Chicken Swing that I haven't used but people say chickens like it and there are videos of them using it so it might be something to try. You can also build a 'salad bar' - both My Pet Chicken and Sandhill Preservation offer a chicken salad seed mix, and you can build a structure out of wood covered with wire that allows you to plant it in their run and keep them from getting to it until it's a certain height, at which point you can let them at it. That would be more of a spring thing though.

As for the CDs, I think they're for bird of prey repellent?

I have 4 isa brown hens. I absolutely love them. They were a gift my brother gave my daughter. So far their personalities are great and they are fantastic layers. I would love a rooster just like them. I need a big rooster since i lost my bob who was a huge light brahma.

I'm not sure where you're located, but while I don't have an isa brown rooster, I do have several cockerels that should grow up to be pretty big, if you're interested. They're all good with people and good with the hens.

Don't see much posted from people here in NY. I'm from about 40 miles west of Albany I'm the great Schoharie Valley.I have showing here a picture of my chicken coop. It is framed on an old pop-up camper.Easy to move with truck or garden Tractor.

We know where Schohaire Valley is as we often go that way when headed to Albany area. Nice coop - great repurposing for a pop up camper.
