Could have been a barn rat or a mouse that was trying to get warm. I have found bloody piles of bedding a few times I'm my coop. I hope it's not a disease waiting to happen because I can't keep critters out and still have air flow. Something always finds a way in.

Funny how 16 degrees inside the chx house feels warm compared to the face cracking who knows what below zero wind chill on the way to & from. Burr! Come on spring!!

Must be pretty chilly on your mountain - the valley here is a toasty -1F right now with wing chill of OMG!

Where could I find Welssumers? I haven't raised chicks. We have purchased pullets from someone in Groton. I would probably take 4 since they seem to be of good temperament.

I got mine from a hatchery, but I'm sure there are people here who raise Welsummers - have you tried the Welsummer thread here?
