NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello all. So is it possible to build a chicken coop with whole pallets? And without cutting anything? I have no knowledge of carpentry.

Yes it is possible. I'm building one this week out of pallets for this year's meat birds. Although, it will most likely require some cutting. The cutting doesn't have to be perfect, but just rough lengths to work. You will also need a pry bar and a hammer, and a cordless drill/driver. Depending on how fancy you want to make it, you will use a lot of pallets. You can find tons of images and pages on the net if you do a search for pallet barns plans, pallet shed plans, or pallet chicken coop plans.

Thanks guys. I am trying to avoid prying the boards off. I can picture myself gouging out bits of my hands with whatever I'm using to to do that. I'm quite close to a Home Depot, and I suppose I will need to buy and cut at least four pieces of wood for the corners, and they can help me with that. I will try to pick nice, sound pallets. There's a place close by me that gives them away. I'm thinking I could make a rough box with them and staple hardware cloth to the insides. Roof will be slightly sloped, so whatever openings resulting under that, I would cover also. The door will be tricky!

Oh no, we are crazy. Just not the scary creepy dirty coop with starving birds type of crazy. We are more the sell birds at just enough over cost to raise so we can keep fresh in the fridge of our friends and still feed ourselves. By today's standards we are crazy simply because we are not out for profit. I vote to feed those we can for as little money as possible, in fact one of our "customers " won't be paying money at all, she will be paying in fruit from her property. One will be paying with work on our property. I'm not greedy well all need help and we all need food. Why not trade one for the other. That's why most consider me crazy, because I barter.

Honestly why not barter though? Rancher your a bit older than I am so your body doesn't hold out to the cold as well as mine. I'm a busy mom of 5 who always needs something to keep the kids busy. You have piles of debris on your property my kids could clean up to save you the work, you grow fresh vegetables and have fresh eggs that could save on my grocery bill. Just an example, sadly you are way to far for my to trade my time for your veggies. If you were closer though that's what we do. I have a lady who loves our eggs that makes the best bread, so sketch gives me a loaf of bread for a dozen eggs. Works out great for both.

So yes we might be a bit crazy in the fact that money only gets a person so far, but loyalty and friends get you the rest of the way.

I don't think that's crazy at all - it cuts out the middle man (Uncle Sam). We give a friend 1 doz/wk for a deer in the winter, I'm always happy to trade. Right now I will be trading 6 bantams for the loan of a friends incubator..

Well thank you all for the vote of not crazy. That makes me feel good. I think money and greed are what makes people so ugly to one another. So avoid dealing in money and deal in good . Like when life was simple.

Candled tonight, wasn't planning on it but hubby wanted to see how the chickies were growing. Pulled 10. Isbars: 3 clear, 1 blood ring. Wyandottes: 1 clear, 1 blood ring. Spitz: 3 clear, 1 blood ring. Ameraucanas all trucking along the best I can see. New bator due here tomorrow. Of course with the removal of tonight's 10 and the one prior, they will all fit back in my turner. Bah, at least I get a nice HovaBator out of this.

I just enjoy sharing the eggs. I give some to our youth pastor every week, 3 pregnant ladies who need healthy eggs, 1 or 2 who have had health issues. What could be more satisfying? We enjoy a life that most of the world can only dream of. Time to be content and grateful for what we have.

I give away eggs also. Others enjoying them gives me more pleasure than profit. I just boiled 45, hopefully the kids don't eat them up, takes a dozen per quart for pickled eggs. Made habeñero pickled eggs last time,..I think eggs destroy heat, they were not hot at all. ....
