NY chicken lover!!!!

Well now Watkins Glen is a very touristy place is it not?  They've got the race track right?  Parks and all. So it would make a nice vacation to stay and get paid or just stay with free (sort of ) lodging. My angst/ire was not with you. Lord have mercy how could you know what would happen?

You've heard of that Uber type thing but for lodging.  Airbnb?  That would be a nice trade.  They get reduce cost lodging for taking care of the chickens while you're away.

These days it just seems folks are afraid to get upset and let others know it. Being angry for the right reasons isn't bad and you had every right to be upset.  Even with a death in the family. Though I do understand some folks don't handle it well.  Course I don't hold grudges so if I did get upset I wouldn't hold it forever.  Such is life. I am glad no one died.

I did have a similar experience when I first got chickens. Came home to find the door between the two coops was open and the flocks were mixed. Seems the woman,  a friend of mine,  who I got to take care of them for the weekend let her two boys come down and do it.  Neither was mature enough. Even today when they're in they're late teens.  Couple of doofuses.  Like you I never asked her again. Live and learn.

I won't be at chicken stock but I hope you get lots of chicks.

Watkins is a cute little town. It does have a very nice gorge with several beautiful falls. The gorge trail leads under a couple falls and thru caves blasted thru the slate when the trail was made. The track is also very nice. NASCAR comes once a year, I think in early July. But there's also several SCCA events. My favorite is vintage weekend where they shut down Main Street and have the vintage race cars run the old road course right thru town. The SCCA events are usually free, too. Watkins is also right in the middle of the wine trail bc it's at the base of Seneca lake. So a reasonable wine tour could take you down one side of the lake stopping at various wineries along the way and then dropping you in Watkins for dinner. Come visit & see for yourself.

My first reaction to seeing the state of my chicken house was anger & frustration, but I was quickly overcome with the need to figure out what to do about it. For whatever reason my pet sitter did not read or follow most of the instructions i left, why would she listen now? It seemed like a waste of energy, especially if she's got other stuff going on. Hope she's ok. In the mean time my broodies have settled into their new suite and everyone else seems to be eating, drinking, scratching, and pooping just fine.

Wow, nine bare backs. Was that a roo or a jackhammer!

Yeah, we are aware of the rooster/bareback connection. Pretty sure she was some rooster's favorite there! The space is smaller, but she seems ecstatic and she's gone from dull brownish-black to radiant green sheen in two days. And the other has been enjoying herself, too.

At first I saw rolling hills and thought, "man, are these guys getting a demotion?" and then I saw the marks. They've actually adjusted really rapidly, both to the flock and to us. They're also really, really loud when you pick them up - which we appreciate for security reasons.

We actually haven't had an egg stealing problem... yet. Knocking on wood.
Well now I can't say about the rooster but I do know chickens are strange. If you go into your coop at night you're likely to see them lined up by breed. I had eight different breeds so I just think some breeds didn't like the others.

The Dominiques were a bossy breed, and noisy. I had one hen who squawked for the others to come in at night. It was not hard to understand why hens are called biddies.

Aussies were nice as were the Buff Orps.

I had a young Cuckoo Marans roo who was young and gang busters. He's just sit near the door and dance with any hen that walked by. He was huge. I feared he'd kill poor Frenchy so he had to go. I regret giving him up though.

Good day everyone, I am from the town of Horseheads. I want to raise chickens but the ordinance states I cannot. Has anyone ever gotten these changed? If so how did you go about doing that?

I have a hoop coop question. What is the difference between hog panels and cattle panels ?
Well now from what I can see on TSC website Hog panels aren't as wide/tall. Only 34" wide by 16' long. Where as the Cattle panels are 50" wide by 16 ' long.

Pigs I don't expect would jump very high so a lower fence would work out fine.

As for hoop coops. I suppose if you wanted a narrower coop a 34 in wide panel would work out okay. I'd never considered the Hog panels.

They might work for a broody coop or chick coop. Though a 50" wide coop isn't that much bigger. You could set up two or more broodies in one.

I've been trying to figure out an inexpensive way to separate my diff breeds for breeding pens

I always suggest the book City Chicks by P. Forman. Lots of info on working toward change.

Now you might want to check your zoning, which is different than an ordinance. Too, don't take a phone call as proof, look for it in writing. You'd be surprised at how little folks know. Lord have mercy they don't get paid a great deal.

Now you could also ask for a variance or special permit. This might allow you to keep a few hens.

You might get a petition going or letters from your neighbors stating they won't mind.

Had a lady here to buy two hens and she lives in the city but I suspect no one knows she has the hens. She has just three.

I wish you well and hope you get your chickens.

I just get so mad about this thing. I've had dogs that were more trouble. And cats too! My nextdoor neighbor had two dogs that I never saw get walked. Her house stunk to high heavens. I bet you'd find lots of complaints about dogs where you are. Maybe not documented but I bet there are plenty.
