NY chicken lover!!!!

I have 6 week olds getting well enough developed I am reasonably sure I can tell which ones are pullets if you are interested; either marans mix or EE mix.  I also have a couple of Jersey Giant and marans pullets from last year's hatch.  And a trio of year old speckled sussex.  I am about an hour from the Catskill exit of the thruway if you would want to come and pick them up.  The price will be modest.

I was actually looking into some of the breeds you have, any White Leghorn pullets by chance? Another breed I'd like to try, I'm not really going crazy (to big) seeing its my first shot at this adventure, want to see how all works out especially through the winter months, would definitely like to hatch my own eventually, but that won't be for some time, need to learn how to float before you swim! Lol
I'm probably looking for 6 maybe 7 pullets/starters if that's ok with you? And as long as they are raised organically!

I forgot to close the coop last night. No losses but a crowing rooster competition outside my window all morning. I went out to the meatie enclosure and I'm missing a meatie. I've had a terrible time raising meaties- mostly my own errors. My guess is cat, as it is pretty much my only predator that could get a single chicken out of that enclosure. My garden still isn't planted. I'm having a frustrating morning. Hopefully my sister in law has good luck with the Catskill Homesteader hatch from the eggs she won at Chickenstock and I can replenish my groups. (Thanks Maria!)

if you can't get enough of your garden planted let me know. I have access to 30 acres of vegetables for very inexpensive.

I forgot to close the coop last night. No losses but a crowing rooster competition outside my window all morning. I went out to the meatie enclosure and I'm missing a meatie. I've had a terrible time raising meaties- mostly my own errors. My guess is cat, as it is pretty much my only predator that could get a single chicken out of that enclosure. My garden still isn't planted. I'm having a frustrating morning. The parents get standard laying pellets and scratch feed and free range all day year round. I (and my neighbors) use no pesticides or chemicals on our land and I don't treat with antibiotics. The chicks are started and grown out with unmedicated chick starter because I raise ducks and geese as well and they cannot tolerate medicated feed. I have a naturally disease resistant and hardy flock as anything with a weak immune system or not physically strong culls itself. Do you consider that organic?

They are mixed breed, Marans and Jersey Giant roosters with Marans or blue egg hens. A good inexpensive way to get into chickens and learn before you get something more costly. I would like $5 each to at least defer part of the feed costs.

The alternative is 2 speckled sussex, a blue copper marans, and 3 or 4 black jersey giant hens that are a year old.

Boy I had a scare and felt like a idiot. Neighbors dog accross the road came over while me and the boy were tending to the fruit trees in the front yard. Dogs ok but not very friendly and I don't try to make friends with it cause I don't want it coming over, getting hit in the road or annoying my chickens. Neighbor couldn't get it to come back so she came over, it avoided her and went up around the house us following no big deal. Garage door is open so the 30+ chicks can get some good sunlight and I didn't think about it until I saw the door open then sreamed "OMG! my baby chickies!" and went running with the boy on my shoulders. ...
It wasn't in there...

Good day today. Had two keets out as I left for work. I'm gonna give them to one of my broodies when I get home.

Speaking of which, I'm now up to seven - two cemanis, one buff orp, two buff orp/brahma crosses, and one marans, plus Lacie goose. I swear it's contagious. They are piled on top of each other - I've got the marans and Ginger fighting over one nesting box. Ginger gets the keets tonight to stop that. Have to figure out what I want them all to hatch. They already have some eggs so I think I'm just going to mark what they have and distribute them amongst them all.

Also found medicated game bird starter at Tractor Supply today, which is awesome. I don't do medicated feed for my chicks but game birds are more delicate, so the keets will be getting it and it'll be perfect for peachicks if any of mine hatch - they are very prone to coccidiosis. So that was a good find. Probably should have grabbed two bags because who knows how long they'll have it. I also got the cutest reusable bag for grocery shopping - has a bunch of hens on nests and says "What's hatching". Seemed appropriate.

She and I both enjoyed talking to you about the project and I'm glad she won the eggs as I'm not incubating again for a bit. Your Homesteaders are similar to what we're each doing with our flocks. Once my garden is in I might finally get around to expanding the barn coop so I can really focus on my projects.

Part of the delay on the garden is we're actually creating a larger fenced garden (~50'x50') and had to start from scratch in a weed and tree and bush (well established grape vines and overgrown berry bushes) filled area. It had been so tough just to get the tiller (tractor pto powered) through it, and then clear the rocks, that we're just getting the fence going now. I have one more stubborn post hole to dig. Of course it's the one supporting the gate so I can't fudge it.

I secured the meatie enclosure and moved it closer to the house and hope they all make it through the night.
