NY chicken lover!!!!

1. What is a Turken?

2. Folks do realize Leghorns come in other colors? I like the Browns as they're not as noticeable from the air as white chickens are. Still lay the white eggs some folks want. Too there are Black leghorns I think. Though not as common.

3. When I first started my garden I covered everything with tarps. Not a good idea, as they break down. I now use cardboard. My area had hard fill so I do raised beds. I didn't have chickens then so I covered the tarps with shavings. Not affordable now.

Anyhow covering the area with newspapers or cardboard can save time tilling and weeding. Only the area/rows to be planted need to be tilled this way. The newspapers and cardboard break down. I save my newspapers all year long.

Too much tilling causes the soil to dry out and kills the good organisms that plants need., Tilling is a horrible way to keep a garden weed free and IMHO rarely works well.

4. My new/old book on diseases of poultry mentions genetics and the difficulty in getting everything to standard. Even if you started out with two SOP birds their offspring would throw undesirable traits. I had two very nice looking SLW's hens but they were not the best layers and laid medium eggs. Maybe they were large. We get so used to Xtra large that a large seems small, I think.

For me it's a trade off.

And that doesn't even get into the hardiness of the line. I no longer freak if a bird gets sick or dies for some unknown reason. Well I feel bad and double check my husbandry practices, but keeping a closed flock helps me keep the weak birds weeded out.

Sorry if I said to much,

1. Naked Neck Turkens, no feathers on neck (some have bowties), under wings, around vent. Excellent dual purpose chicken, good egg layers and size/meat. Grow faster than most heritage breeds because they don't put as much energy into feathers. Do great in heat and even with the lack of feathers are cold hardy.
I've been wanting to give them a try ever since reading GreenFire Farms "Barbezieux were ranked third in a competition of 20 meat breeds by the French food guide, Gault Millau." Barbezieux was ranked better than the Bresse. I researched Gault Millau looking for the list in that competition, couldn't find it on the English website, had to go on the French website and Google translate. They ranked the Nacked Neck the worlds #1 best tasting chicken.

2. Leghorns, they come in all sorts of colors, red, black, silver, some even in rose comb. Brown crossed with white will give you Red Pyle leghorns, they're pretty. Breeders of Red Pyle leghorns sometimes have to breed brown back into them to get their color right. So are the Isabelle and Mille Fleur, super pretty birds. Exchequer Leghorns are pretty cool and available at many hatcheries.

I've had many people that free range mixed flocks say their white birds rarely get taken, hawks seem to prefer birds that are more natural prey colored. I've even heard someone say their super bright and colorful golden pheasants never get eaten, only their regular pheasants.

@Pyxis cute chick, what kind?

If anyone is looking for some brown egg layers all female I got a code from Meyer Hatchery for free shipping for the 6/6 ship date. Minimum order 15. It's tempting but I don't need 15 chicks

An owl got Aurora this morning :hit Somehow the goslings opened the run on the Eglu I'm keeping them in and they must have been outside very early in the morning because my resident barred owl grabbed Aurora and killed her :( It ate just her head, which is what owls do. It got one of my buff orp hens a few weeks ago too when she decided to sleep outside instead of in the run. Needless to say that Eglu is now locked up like Fort Knox. They'll be too big for an owl to even think about it in a few weeks but until then, no more escaping.

Sorry for your loss. I know what it's like.

Like, over 60 eggs worth!
Then, Monday morning, I found the brooder area that had 70 chicks less than a week earlier, was EMPTY! No chicks anywhere!

I'd noticed some were missing Saturday morning, but of course, I came to Chickenstock, was busy Sunday, so no time to investigate. I'm pretty sure it was rats, since I caught one in the brooder area the next day. I'd already trapped quite a few, so why all of a sudden they decided to take the chicks is beyond me. If it had been another type of predator, it would have gotten the bigger chicks with more "meat" on them.

Thankfully, the chicks from Susieq were ok, as I had them inside "temporarily".

I want some of those dogs. They would fit in perfect with our farm. We have taken in disabled chickens, a bent duck and my old dog is arthritic. A few of those hounds would fit in great!!! Sadly Jon would not be a happy husband.
