Its' a shame you didn't take precautions.. I do not allow rodents to endure but am on my guard setting traps continuously whether I see them or not.Sorry for your loss. I know what it's like.
I Lost a whole batch of eggs to incubator overheating.Like, over 60 eggs worth!![]()
Then, Monday morning, I found the brooder area that had 70 chicks less than a week earlier, was EMPTY! No chicks anywhere!I'd noticed some were missing Saturday morning, but of course, I came to Chickenstock, was busy Sunday, so no time to investigate. I'm pretty sure it was rats, since I caught one in the brooder area the next day. I'd already trapped quite a few, so why all of a sudden they decided to take the chicks is beyond me. If it had been another type of predator, it would have gotten the bigger chicks with more "meat" on them.![]()
Thankfully, the chicks from Susieq were ok, as I had them inside "temporarily".
Anyone who keeps livestock or pets can expect rodents since there is feed to attract them.
I suggest a battery of prevention. Snap traps, sticky traps and cats or dogs.
Rats and mice carry diseases such as Salmonella.
Funny I had a dream about mice last night. I expect I'll be working to catch up when I get home from AK. My DD won't deal with them.
I hope you don't get anymore chicks until you have a proper and safe place to keep them, and have dealt with those rats.
