NY chicken lover!!!!

did the duck eggs look different ?..Maybe she will only set on goose eggs ?

It was a little smaller. The strange this is I've also tried giving her goose eggs that aren't hers and these have vanished too. Well, next year fingers crossed her own eggs will be fertile.

well my Little spitz has a new family ..
She ? has bonded with the other two we hatched that are the same age .
At first she want me at night ..now she only wants them ...Which is the way it should be

She Bonded 1st with baby ...then Bram the little cockerel

Ti Ti released them as her chicks ...which I was waiting for her to do ...
so now they are a Trio ...

They saved his Life .
My hubby wanted to get rid of him this weekend ..
He was pestering the broodys with chicks and any hen not near my main Rooster
and sneaking in and stealing baby food ...
I told him he was really a Ninja....he will have his own honeys now ..
They drove more than 2 hours to get him.. I gave him to them ...

My neighbors (the ones who have no jobs and instead stay home all day doing who knows what and somehow manage to have a hobby farm that I have no idea how they're paying for) got one of their daughters/nieces/some sort of relative a pot belly pig as a pet. Male, and they haven't castrated him. They don't keep him in a pen, so he keeps coming over here. I've had to stop my dog from attacking it once, and he won't do it again now, but it would have been their fault had my dog hurt it. Anyway, I don't mind the pig - he's not dangerous and is skittish so he keeps his distance (although that's liable to change when he matures, why they think it's okay to let a boar that's going to grow tusks and is afraid of humans wander around is beyond me). But, I noticed I was going through chicken feed much faster than usual.

Yep, the pig is eating my feed. I caught him multiple times doing it yesterday, and at one point he literally broke down part of a fence I was putting up to get to it, then when I scared him and tried to get him out he broke one of my fence posts (this fence is not meant to be predator proof since it's within another run, just meant to keep the birds in so it's not strong enough to withstand a large pig). He ate half of my 40 pound bag of chick feed before I caught him.

This afternoon, when I went out to collect eggs, my birds swarmed me, obviously hungry. He had actually gone into the run this morning, over the barrier I tried to set up to keep him out, and cleaned out at least 15 pounds of layer feed from my feeder and my birds didn't get to eat.

What's worse is that was the last of my feed - I was picking up some on the way to work today and that 15 pounds was more than enough to last until tomorrow but now my birds don't get to eat today. This can't go on.

Does anyone vaccinate their flock for bird flu? My mom is being crazy and thinks my kids.are going to get Bird flu ugh.

There is no vaccine for bird flu, Avian Influenza, AI. It comes from and is transmitted from wild birds, mainly during migration season, spring and fall. I'm pretty sure there has been no cases in NY, at least none in poultry farms or backyard chickens in NY.

@Pyxis that's crappy. I'd ask them to pay for feed, and keep their pig contained. If they refuse to keep their pig contained let them know you have the legal right to dispatch it if it is damaging your property and or endangering your livestock (chickens are considered livestock). You won't be able to stop it once it knows where food is. An electric fence might, might not. I've seen pigs contained in electric fence no problems. I've also seen pigs get out of the same electric fence when it was accidentally turned off and they would not stay in after, had to butcher early. You shouldn't have to pay for it.
I wouldn't be surprised if the pig eventually starts eating chickens...

Well this is where you march over there and tell them to control their pig, warning them you will call Animal Control if it happens again. I doubt you'll get them to pay for the feed but it's a shot to at least try.

As for where they get their money, sometimes only God knows and he doesn't usually tell.

I know we grew up poor but my father was in the military and sent money to my mother. While she's long gone, I didn't know he had retired in '63. So what's my point? If you can befriend the kids don't hesitate. I had a neighbor who did and I learned somethings. Letting them see how you live can have an affect and change their life later on. Not all but you might change one life.

It's funny sort of. We had a neighbor who used to hire us to dust her house for a few dollars. Her son's room had a Maple bed and dresser. He being an adult and gone. Anyhow til this day I like Maple bedroom sets. I'm sure she's passed but I hope she made it to heaven for being so kind to us.

Now for why I logged on. I have a climbing rose. Grew from cuttings of my next door neighbor long ago. Each year I try to get it to survive the winters AND mice who have girdled it a couple of times. It makes it back. BUT this past year I put hay and hardware cloth around the base and wrapped it with burlap, in hopes of getting the canes to survive and flower this spring. It only blooms once. Still it did not. Some canes survived but not enough to cover the arbor and bloom.

What can I do? My neighbor never covered hers and some years it would bloom profusely. It wasn't on an arbor, but draped over the chain link fence near the back of her house and sheltered somewhat between our houses, as we lived in the city.

It got one flower this year and the new canes are up high. A couple will be over the top of the arbor. What can I do to get this thing to survive into next year?

Looks like we might get a storm. I hope so sort of which is weird. The thunder is sounding. I'm tired of watering the garden.

Three more hens with eggs but not many. I tossed quite a few last night. Not good. I hope each hen will at least hatch one chick each. So far there are 21. I've picked out a couple of hens to go this fall. New layers. One is a Delaware with white legs. Not sure how that happened. Too and EE that lays brown eggs.

There are two lavender chicks and one that is Big Delores so it has lavender and white. I hope they're pullets. Too there are more than a few black EE's. I hope a few B. Marans.

Anyhow these three girls need to be done sitting. It's been to long.

TTFN, Take care and be well.
