NY chicken lover!!!!

Another thing that works with feeders is to put a large eye screw in a rafter and attach a long chain with one of those repair links that screw open and shut. Use a double ended snap to hang the feeder from the chain and adjust the height for different size and ages of birds. Having it just low enough for them to reach the feed keeps them from scratching out so much.

I buy those cheap $1 clips. They seem to work well. I use them on both ends. I have J hooks in different locations so I can move them around. Your way works well too. Though rather than buy chain I use rope from bales of hay. BUT now that you mention it the chain idea I've used for heat lights over the brooder. Now I'm thinking it will work better too since I'm now hanging waterers for the broody hen and her chicks. I will have to raise it as they grow.

I'm glad you mentioned it. I have unused chain, since I'm not using the brooders.

Hello Everyone! I really want to get started with this idea I've been having since I was like 10. I really want to have pet quails. But I checked online and I've seen I can only get them in a bundle of like 50 or 100. I would only want maybe 3 min but I would just really want these cute guys as pets? Any one knows of a local place I could maybe purchase them?

You don't say where you are which might be good. Perhaps you can find eggs to hatch and buy a small incu like this one. They run about $25 or so. You also might want to google "Keeping Quail for Pets". I'm sure you're not the first to want to do so. I wish you well.

I use baler twine or rope in a pinch, but they pick at the twine and shred it and sometimes rope stretches. With the chain and snap it is really easy to switch out different size feeders and waterers. Chain is not toe expensive if you go somewhere like Tractor Supply and get the exact length you need. I have 7 different coops and added the setup one at a time so it wasn't a big expense all at once.

Where are you, as in general area. Local to me there are several people at swaps with quail for sale.

This is true, but I'm still using a box of rope from a job I had nearly 22 years ago. But I like the chain idea for raising and lowering feeders and waterers, so for that I idea I thank you. I'll be bringing up the chain I have from the brooder tomorrow.

Predator took my Old Man GLW today :'( All of my original chickens are now gone, feeling heartbroken. Hubby found him and the BR hen in the coop when he went to close up. So at 9:30 at night, we added the hardware cloth up both sides. And moved the pile of fence posts I'm sure the predator had been using to stand on to even reach the side of my coop. (It is mounted on a utility trailer frame, so opening is 4' above the ground)
Total loss count in the past week: 8 hens, 1 pullet, 1 roo. And possibly another hen, don't remember seeing her tonight. And some we found the dead body, others is totally missing making me think that more than 1 predator is responsible.
Losing such a wonderful rooster hurts the most, it's hard to find a good roo like him. Tempted to fire up the incubator to hatch some more of his babies.

Thursday I am picking up 25 cornish X babies. I can't wait. Coop and run are all finished and waiting. Big bag of feed being picked up tomorrow, any suggestions on type? I prefer Blue Seal brand and currently use 24% protein and 16% . What's best for the meaties and how long do I grow them out?

I don't have any experience with the CX, but I use blue seal multi flock chick and game starter for my freedom rangers. The first batch this spring averaged 7 lbs in 12 weeks. It is 22% protein.

Sorry for your losses - that's a really bad week for you...
