NY chicken lover!!!!

I would also like to point out for those who weren't sure it was exactly 6 days ago that I stopped leaving a light on at night. They had a light in every night for 16 weeks, so either she was ready regardless or the light made a difference.

Congrats on the 1st egg ! How old is she ? 4 1/2 - 5 months ? the time most start laying

Your Welcome !</p> Grandma, do you know about regular size Silkies? Not Bantam. As you may remember we lost 6 hens and 1 rooster. We had an opportunity to purchase a Full Size Silkie. She is much taller and looks a bit different. Going to see what happens. Any info would be appreciated. Regard, Aria

There are large fowl silkies, but not in the US. The silkie you bought is either a project bird from someone who has been breeding their silkies for larger size, or a hatchery silkie that really almost couldn't be considered a silkie - while they have silkied feathers and mulberry skin (usually) and most definitely have some silkie in them somewhere, they do not conform to the standard at all. A lot of them even have single combs instead of walnut. There is also at least one hatchery now selling what they call "super silkies", which are just large fibro birds that sometimes have silkied feathers that probably have silkie ancestry that they've bred for meat. Could be one of those.

Tractor Supply 'silkies' are BIG and lay great and start early. Pretty much proof they are not pure, real silkies are small, and don't lay very good. The ones I got did all have walnut combs, silkie feathers, five toes, black skin, not much poof on the head, not a lot of leg/foot feathering, no beards. From everything I've read like Pyxis said, there is standard large breed silkies but have never been imported to the US.
My TSC white 'silkies' / white Jersey Giant crosses are some pretty cool looking birds.

No I haven't died.

life got in the way of everything else. Have been trying to improve my health (I have fibromyalgia and CFIDS) through diet, vitamins and mild exercise.
I have missed everyone and everything chicken.
My flock is doing really well and I recently purchased 6 chicks and 6 lavender Orpington eggs for my broody Midget to hatch.
I will be busy catching up on everyone's posts.

Had a friend who used to say, "If you wake up in the morning and nothing hurt, you know you died last night" Of course when he wakes up these days, if they wake up where he is, I doubt he's hurting.

Anyhow, I'm glad you're doing okay.
