NY chicken lover!!!!

Resisting the urge to hatch too. My customers keep sending me pictures of the chicks they're hatching. Cute, fluffiness is tempting but I brood in our back room and I'm not having chicks in the house for the holidays! I've already decided that I'll start in the end of January. Between flock swaps and a local Amish feed store, I have a lot of prep to do.

Hello all-

I found a great resource for chicken raising and the permaculture concept- (Using your chickens to work best for you & your yard/garden etc...) Justin has a free video that's 2 1/2 hours and ends tonight at 8 pm. Some of the stuff is basic but who knows where you may pick up some information you were looking for. I first found him through Mother Earth News.
His site is https://abundantpermaculture.com He also made a Chickshaw (Kinda a chicken tractor concept & has free plans for that)

Hope you all are well! Your families and fur babies. Happy Holidays!

Christina

Been gone for a while...217 posts...I will never be able to read them all.... So sorry if I missed anything important....Welcome to all the new members...Sorry for any losses....Hope that everyone is doing well. Been busy with working and family. Never seems to be enough hours in a day. Birds are all doing well. Seems that this year I hatched mostly roosters & drakes. Such as life I guess. Have processed most of my extra drakes. Have at least 2 more to go. Then have about 10 roosters that need to go to freezer camp.

We got nailed with snow this last storm. We ended up with over 30 inches and now it has all melted so everything is so muddy and wet. The ducks are loving it, but the chickens are NOT. Their run is literally slop in most of it. Sucks.

My incubators are both acting up and I have no idea what is going on with them. I have 2 of the small Brinsea incubators and the temps are off in both of them. The older one that I have had for 2 years is WAY off. I have to turn it up the the highest possible temp for it even to get close to 97 degrees and the other one is almost as bad and that one I have only had for one season. I may have to send them in to have them calibrated and figured out.

Hope that everyone is ready for the holidays! I am so far behind and have so much left to do, I don't know how I will be able to get it all done.

I sold my incu, so no worries there. I'll just let the hens do the work. I have an EE with three youngster but they're feathered out. She's not ready to give them up. They were in a half coop with a heat light but I've moved them so make thing easier. I'm hoping to just have two or three coops to tend. I kind a wish my large hoop had a full dirt floor to make using it for storage easier.

Since I'm back to work I don't stop in much either or have anything to say. If you can believe that.

Hey y'all! I'm back!!!!! And completely caught up from early summer. I resisted rejoining the convo until I read everything I missed. Took me a month. Congratulations to those with new additions (esp cutipatooti on your little girl) and rancher on your new job. Condolences and sympathies to those of you that suffered losses and have problems, esp Pyxis. Rancher I'm so sorry to hear about your wife, my thoughts are with you both.

Thank you and welcome back! Things are better on this end. After another talking to with the neighbor, the wife this time, the pig is FINALLY actually penned up (apparently her husband just never told her about the problem :he ) and the turkeys were eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. So hopefully no more issues from them.
