NY chicken lover!!!!

So we have had a strange raccoon wandering the neighborhood in the mornings totally disoriented not afraid of cars etc. well it decided to camp out behind our garage this morning out in the open.... we ended up calling the local PD they sent an officer after some convincing she did put it out of its misery (appeared to have distemper symptoms) but then she just left it here for us to dispose of so bizarre...? IMO sick wild animals are a danger to ppl and domestic animals as well and isn't there a protocol for animal control or the DNR to be called in? I'm asking idk...?
That's kinda scary, it might have had rabies. Hope you didn't touch it. Call your county department of health and report it. They will have advice on disposing of it in a safe way and may take it for testing. Or call EnCon (Environmental Conservation).

Our local DEC would respond to something like this. I would call around and see if you can find someone else to dispose of it.

I am in need of some advice. Every few months I get a soft shell egg. I give the chickens complete layer pellets plus as a treat they get grit and cracked corn. What could be causing them to lay a soft shell egg?
While layer feed does have calcium it can sometimes not be enough if treats are added. To get thing back on track buy some Oyster shell grit and toss a bit on their feed every now and then. This should bring who ever is the culprit back on line. It won't hurt the other hens nor the rooster.

I would be concerned about rabies right off the bat. Don't bury it's carcass, burn it or dispose of it far away from your animals. Do a search on rabies and how to deal with it. Make sure all your animals are vaccinated. Birds don't get rabies as they're not mammals. Or at least that's what I'm told.

Do not touch the carcass with your bare hands. You can take the body to your local vet for rabies testing (as long as the head is intact). Raccoons can die from canine distemper also so hopefully it was just sick from that.

Based on what I read it appeared to be distemper. My fiancé used gloves and an old shovel handle so he didn't actually touch it. I was at work when the officer came and after it started walking aimlessly towards her she was finally convinced by my fiancé to shoot it she didnt want to...

Seriously it's been deliriously walking the neighborhood w/ pets and children all over I'm an animal lover but one is sick like that it's gotta go. If we didn't live in town my fiancé would of whacked it himself! I was just surprised she didn't call anyone to come and get it for testing/disposal? Ugh!!!!

I went to help my girlfriend at the feed store she works at today. Nobody warned me the new shipment of chicks are coming in. I took 7 of them and I'm not sure if I'm happy about it or regret. I only took them because one was crippled and I felt bad for it, I doubt it will survive. All pullets and being that she works there I got a reasonable discount as well as free chick starter. Still hoping to find some really nice ameraucanas in the upcoming months but I'm not gonna get worried if I can't get them. That's what these chicks are. I am not set up at all for them so they're in a small aquarium that might be big enough for them for a week. Better get to construction that new coop this weekend...
