NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks so much for swift response, and the offer of a pair of silver Spitz, looked them up in my Storey illustrated Poultry Breeds Book - such pretty birds, and would certainly meet the 'more light color birds' part of my request - although a bit wary of the high strung raucous description (thanks for your honesty) have found our Leghorn high strung, panicking and dashing about when we just move around in her general direction, to top up food or similar (so much so that we jokingly call 'murder, murder' when she goes into one of her flappy freak outs as you'd think that was what was happening from the level of commotion). I think I may like to find some birds that are a little calmer if possible.

I'm leaning more towards trying to get a pair consisting of 2 different breeds, and still hoping I can combine this with also getting a range of egg colors, and seems that the Spitz usually lay white eggs? I've read quite a few comments online about them choosing to roost in trees, have you found this to be true? Ours currently always put themselves back into the coop at dusk.

I really appreciate you answering me so quickly and offering birds, just not sure they're quite what I'm looking for, and it's only day 1 of my search! If a few weeks down the line I haven't managed to find anything, and you still have them available for sale I will certainly keep in touch.

Not a problem! It's interesting how members of the same breed can be so different - I have a chamois colored Spitz and she is a darling, will allow picking up etc. I haven't had trouble with them flying off, although they love to free range and they always go into the coop with the others just fine.
I'm not actively selling them, so they will be here for a while I'm sure

Gramma - glad your girl is doing well. See you soon,

After a week, might take awhile for everyone to find the place and know it's back. Most of us here are not non-stop posters . I waited and waited almost went to BYH

Oh thank goodness! The backyard herds site kept saying I was trying to send spam or inappropriate content.

I've been watching my incubator! Day 19 ends soon!! I probably should have spent some time today getting the brooder ready....

Hello! :frow I made it to the new site! So far I rather like it.
I got 12 new peeps! :ya (10 black, 2 silver) Some are bantams, some are just small I guess, perhaps part bantam. They are all smaller than the last batch, and most hatched a day early. Hatch day is today, 5/15. Still waiting on 2 eggs though.
Had more issues with this hatch than the first one,
  • almost shrink wrap
  • sticky chick
  • pasty butt
  • curly toes
All issues were very mild and easily handled, and all the chicks are doing great!

last night I found a dead chicken in the pen of young birds we put in the coop a week ago. Since it was after.dark, I couldn't tell much about the rest of them. This morning I see that they are listless, heads tucked down, feathers fluffed. Looks like they didn't eat much yesterday. There are no external parasites, no diahrrea, no nasal discharge, no sneezing or coughing. The adults in the pen next to them are fine.

So, I mixed up a solution of electrolytes & probiotics that I will try to give them. I also am going to go buy some Tylan 50 and read up on how to use it.

I have never had sick chickens, other than mites. Any suggestions and advice are welcome.

My DD is heartbroken. And I am not too happy either.

Morning all! I'm glad that BYC is back. I woke up to dense fog this morning so I haven't made it to give the steers their treat today. I thought we were in the middle of May, where is the warm weather that usually prepared us for June , July and part of August?
