NY chicken lover!!!!

View attachment 1504606 View attachment 1504607 Hi there. Not sure how many of you are in the upstate area. But we have been dealing with a lot of flooding. Here are a couple pix of my friend’s coop. They had to relocate the birds until the water levels go down. Anyone else dealing with this mess? If so, be safe!!!!
We live in Middlesex valley, but have been lucky so far, fingers crossed. Friends in Lodi rent a cottage to vacationers and they all had to be rescued by canoe.
The worst flooding we had was a few years back and the water rose about 10ft above normal, it was still well below the barn tho' thankfully.

Out of 12 eggs 9 hatched ..However 1 chick got attacked by another Broody ( a sumatra - she knows her own ) ..and is currently in the house it got out of its cage and into the other cage and the other Broody attacked it. I didn't see it happen but I suspect that's what happened chippy who was the mommy has been attacking the other Broody every time she seen her it's got blue coat on its boo boos it will be stronger and I will put it back with its Mommy eventually . i put plastic wire around the cages 2 days ago ...Yesterday that other chick was out again thankfully it could not get into the other cage .. So I I fortified it more .. with refrigerator & grill grates .. Lets see if Houdini chick escapes out ..yesterday it was corralled ...it was still in the cage with Momma today ..this is when they 1st hatched ( Houdini on the left ) ( baby Blue on the right ) I took baby blue out day before yesterday and reintroduced them .. .for about 5 min ..She tried to get it to come in to the nest to her ...it was more interested in the other chicks in the other cage ..Its BRO/Sis was under Chippy ..it didnt know that ..LOL. BB has issues still it swell up at night . Ive been giving it a bath to loosen its wounds so they drain and triple antibiotic ointment once a day . It spent a hour out with mom and BRO/Sis? who knows this early . yesterday they where together for about a hour outside

Hi guys. I'm Peggy and I live about 20 miles south of Ithaca, NY. Right now I'm down sizing my girls for the winter, but usually have about 25 to 35 chickens. Fell in love with Blue Cochins, they seem to handle our weather very well. I have a variety of different chickens, BR, Cochins, Royalle Faverole,EE, NHR, white Giant, Wyandotte, Shaver Red, Buff Orp., Austrolorp,Speckled sussex, that's it for now but am always adding more!!!!!

Hi Peggy!

I'm Shana from WAY up north near the Canadian border. Would love to take some of your darlings but am.very far away. Just wanted to say hi.

I would be interested in splitting a turkey order come springtime possibley, keep me on ur mind! Have you ever heard of the bath poultry auction? we went for the first time this past fall and got some great additions to our flock! Theyll be having another one come May[/QUOT

Hi there! Ok, so what's this about a poultry auction and how do we find those? Didn't know there WAS such a thing!! Hold my purse cause Momma needs more chickens

Hello fellow peeps

I'm way North of most that I see here but am looking to network with others near me. I live in a small town called Brushton near the Canadian border to Cornwall/Montreal. Closest towns are Malone, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Canton, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Watertown. All within 2 hours of my home. Hoping to make some buddies who don't MIND talking chicks with me because I'm driving my family crazy! LOL. I'm new to raising chickens so I'm always reading, researching, running out to the coop to try to identify the things I learned and to try new tricks that I've seen people post here! BTW, thanks to the good folks here, I'm no longer afraid that I will hurt them when I handle them And I've made a friend. My NH Red hen (who is completely white ) whom I have dubbed Big Bertha, is accepting petting, even laid down in the run and allowed me to love on her for 15 minutes!!! Now, the other 4 birds are very interested in the Momma (me)! Progress .

Welcome!

Do you have pictures of Bertha? A NH Red can't be white; sounds like she's actually a different breed.

Near Letchworth NY here approx hour south of rochester! Anyone want to trade eggs/chicks in the spring??

I have pairs of: Giant blue cochins, silver laced wyandottes and cuckoo marans that I plan to isolate and collect eggs from come spring if anyone is interested. Also I have about a dozen guineas I'll have a ton of fertile eggs come warm weather!

I would like to expand my : turkeys, need a red bourbon hen (have a tom)
peafowl (have a white peacock approx 5-6 months old) (available for trade now)
speckled suxxes's (have hens)
partridge cochins (BEAUTIFUL BIRDS only have one hen!)

If anyone is interested in trades, PM me! If you are looking for something else, PM me anyways, my neighbors and Aunt all have chickens too!
It's so nice to see we have alot of local chicken folks!! I live in Spencer NY, south of Ithaca. I have alittle of everything: RIR's, BO's, a few Golden Comets, one BR, some silkies & one pair of Mille's.
I LOVE standard cochins, don't care what color, cause they are such nice broodie's.
Anyone ever wants to split a chicken or turkey order with me, just give me a holler!!
How do the cochins hold up in the worst of winter weather? I'm about 5 hours north of you, near Cornwall Canadian border, so our weather is unpredictable and horrible! I am building a flock, and in the Spring of 2019 we hope to be in our new home with a palace size coop!! Going to need some good chicks to fill it up! I Had been concentrating on orphington, wyandotte, and Sussex but now I'm wanting to add some Cochin beauties to the bunch! What do you think? I'd even consider driving to you to split an order this Spring. Believe me, I KNOW there's nothing up here except mixed breed flocks and owners do not sell any of them often. It's been extremely difficult to get the five I do have!! (3 8week pullets supposed to be barred rocks, and a 17 week Wyandotte & NH Red) One pullet has me baffled, not sure if it's a roo or even what breeds it's mixed with but it sure is a pretty thing!

See that's what I thought!! Even told the breeder that I believed she was leghorn mix but he assure me she was a NH red. I was like, but...she's WHITE
Wish the pics were better but she's on the move all the time! The coop protector, first out to run and last to go in at night, even restless at night. I'm pretty sure that all of mine are basically mutts But, they are my starter group, ones that I'm learning the lay of the land with. I'm looking to add a flock in the Spring and will be much more choosy with those!
