NY chicken lover!!!!

Is that you Sandy? Well I will turn them three times it only makes sense so it is top to bottom,,,I think last year we need only twice....we luck out! I also have the problem as I had to get the Cochin eggs in as I wasn't sure on how fresh they were and then the Rosecombs came Sat but needed to rest a day and then the Barred Rocks and Golden Wyndottes didn't come when I thought and I forgot to put in some others so now I have different days going on.....a mess It just didn't come together as I had planned. Has anyone else had different start days? The Top Hatch is working good now...I had to put sponges in to get the humidity up to 50%...The 70's incubator is correct on both..just a lot of eggs to turn..but it should work...I am dying to candle them...my kids too..How to you get those cute little smiles on..will have to ask my son! Thanks again for the help. Karenk.

After reading alot of posts I have come to the conclusion that it's the operator not the incubator.
I have read that if you hand turn the eggs that it needs to be an odd number. I don't know why. Not an issue because I used an egg turner.

I believe you need to make sure to turn the eggs an odd #of times a day so that every night (when they go unturned for the longest amount of time) they alternate which way they are set. Does that make sense? I get so much information from this sight, it's good to finally be able to contribute some knowledge.

Good night, everyone. Sweet chicken dreams! I'm going next Saturday to pick up a few barred rocks and easter egger chicks. Would LOVE to do my own hatch, but don't want to chance getting all roos. Love my 2 boys, but my hens are starting to look a little rooster pecked. Why is that not a term we use... guess it's overmating. I have a very small flock... for now.

I have the same incubator. I usualy put a few on top to rotate in if there is any duds on bottom. I stand the eggs up in the little wire holders and stuff a little wax paper in the end to keep them upright. The ones on top are postioned, laying down on top of the wax paper wads. If they are small eggs I sandwich (between the egg and top of 'bator) a little wad of wax paper on top of the "extra" eggs so they down slide/move around. I have't lost one yet being on top. Once I candle and toss any clears or duds I fill the gaps with the extras.....so far it has worked out perfectly......knock on wood.

Wax paper wads - got it. That's what I will do.
Another question: Do you hatch them in the Brinsea. My first hatch I took the chicks out when they were dry. The second time I waited for more than a day. 12 had hatched and it seemed really crowded. Both times there were 22 and 24 eggs at lockdown. How do you time moving them? I know the humidity stayed in the range better the second time around.

I checked USPS tracking online and it the Blue Plymouth eggs arrive Friday morning at the post office.

My DH went to get them and they said they didn't have anything. Of course they call him as he walks in the front door to ask him if he wants to pick up the package or have it delivered. Their way of saying they found it! They rested all day and I set them that night. Lucky me, he sent 32, but 2 were cracked. These eggs were jumbos - 2.4 oz!

I had to leave 1 divider out to fit 24 in the bottom. And the 6 on top aren't rolling. They can't as they just fit in. Most of my eggs are 1.7 to 2.0 oz, but they look tiny compare to these. On some I had to look twice for the small end.

These are going to be BIG chicks! I think I'm going to need a hatcher, unless they don't make it to lockdown! Craigslist here I come! Has anyone hatch Plymouth Rocks?

Yes it's me. I e-mailed you. I think that if there is only a day or two between setting batches of eggs you should be ok. But I'm no expert. My first and only batch took three days total to hatch. I do think that the humidity is a bit high though.

It is an excellent article on incubating eggs. Also check out the forum on hatching, alot of good tips.

Well,....at least 1) the snow is leaving us quickly.....2) the nasty, nasty wind dried it up quicker 3) the excess water in my basement has brought my room humidity to 34%. That's got to be good for my 'bator right?

good morning everyone,

We got some water in the basement. Not too bad.
Spring flowers are growing. I don't think they'll bloom for easter, but
I should have a lot of blue rock fuzzy bottoms by then!

Started 84 eggs in the incubator Saturday and let a silkie have six. I expect that some will be duds as my black copper rooster is pretty heavily outnumbered. Besides the mixed eggs that came from my chickens I picked up 17 barred rock, 7 rir and 10 bc maran. I'm gonna wait till Sunday to try my first candle view. Can hardly wait!

Hi everyone else too!!! I seperated out my 3 cuckoo maran hens yesterday to get them ready for their mate so I sell some fertile eggs in April, 3 weeks seems sooooo far away and my hens are NOT HAPPY not being able to free range with everyone else like normal!!
I bought a super duper metal nesting box from a lady in GA I found on BYC, her husband makes them on the side and I had my DH hang it for me this past weekend, it is soooooo nice and I am very happy with it. My chickens don't sleep in it at night (they must know it is for laying purposes ONLY) so all my eggs are nice and clean when I collect them, well worth the money IMHO. I'll have to post some pics of it soon.

Hope everyone's hatches are doing well (I'm jealous!!)

<------enjoying seeing the sun today!
